I'm considering using all varifical 5442-ZE cameras for a residential property. I don't need to zoom in on anything more than 30 feet. Cameras are all either 7foot high for facial identification or higher as overview cams.

Is this at all reasonable? I also don't want any bullet cameras or PTZ

Nothing wrong with that.

If you are like us, you find over time that you max out the zoom.

And then need more cams lol

Is there any advantage to the 5442 vs 5442-ZE other than lower price? Seems like going varifocal gives you more flexibility.

Some will say the 5442 fixed lens will produce a slightly better image than the varifocal, but that is dependent on your eyes and monitor LOL.

General consensus is unless you know you can get by with the fixed lens, the varifocal is the better option.

Many of us with the varifocal end up maxing out the zoom over time LOL.

This is a great thread which will show why all of the same 2.8 or 3.6mm cameras is the wrong choice:

Each location is different and requires a lens appropriate for the specific task. I use a mix of both as needed

I use 3.6 fixed lens at most entrance doors if I can place the camera within about 6-8ft

Fixed lens DO have better light pickup, its inherent and proven. How much depends on how much you zoom your VF. At Max zoom your VF loses a LOT of its light sensitivity. Same with PTZ's
