Virtualized Cameras, NVRs, and Software?

Looking to expand on my technical capabilities and learn the software, camera configurations, and NVRs for Dahua, Hikvision, Axis, Digital Watchdog, Honeywell, etc. Has anyone setup a virtual enviroment in their home labs to emulate the systems and devices lately? Was it successful or worth the hassle?
