Well, somewhat real.

I'm thinking of getting this:

I already know not to turn it on, since the flashing red light is fake.
I've done some research, and I read somewhere that it should have
a green light coming out the back, to look realistic.

So my question is: Does it have to have a green light on the back,
to best simulate a real security camera?

This is just part of my whole plan - I want to put these in my windows,
and will have real window alarms too.

Thanks for your thoughts.

I can tell it's fake already by the antenna. That style of antenna is supposed to have a 'hinged' section on the very bottom. Looks like someone just glued it into the case.

With fake cameras, there's usually a limited number of designs and I see them all the time. Most of them I just laugh at because it's soo obvious. i.e. no cables coming out the back, lens doesn't even have clear plastic/glass, poor quality plastic, wrong cables etc.

To answer your question, it depends on what kind of thief you get. Some will break in regardless what you have, some will know it's a fake camera, and yeah.

If you really wanted to have a fake camera, maybe try and get real ones that are dead and use those instead. This is just my view anyways, I'm sure others will chime in.

I just threw away some dead cameras. If you want some I may have some later on.

@tunguska565 Best advice is just get real analog ones. They are the same price as your "fake one" but at least real and won't scream "fake" to someone when they look at them. Granted these are older analog low TVL cameras, but if your not connecting them or recording that doesn't matter.

Below is an eBay link - presorted/search for buy it now, free shipping, analog 420 tvl cameras that start at 10 bucks. I can't get the link to post via the hyperlink so just cut and paste the below removing the " at the beginning and end.

You can't beat that peace of mind when you have real cameras. I was going to mention earlier OP I hope you're not relying on the dummy cameras to make you feel safe. That would just be a false sense of security.

Some people wait till something actully happens to them before they get a surveillance system. Chances are that event may not happen again in their lifetime.

EDIT: Maybe you should get a mix of real and dummy cameras. Put the real cameras in higher risk places and dummy ones on the less risky places.

Also if you do get real ones, having them behind a window with IR on will cause problems.

I wouldn't say its completely useless, having a visible camera (real or fake) will most definitely act as a deterrent to the majority of criminals who are just looking for an easy target. I would put it in the same category as having fake "beware of dog" signs or "security systems present" signs. Which when compared to having nothing at all - is better.

Going back to the OP though, you would definitely be better off buying some old camera and using that instead of an intentionally made fake camera.

^True.

I mean't it more as don't get it to make you feel better sort of thing.

Real cameras won't stop any burglar, attacker, and etc either. However, it can provide evidence after the fact. As well as allow you to monitor your home, and be notified if there was movement and etc for you to call the police or whatnot.

Focusing on better security would not be a bad idea either. Burglars/attackers can bump open locks, jimmy open windows and etc.
