What to do, what to do with another computer? Go with the NVR. What are my options?

I have blue iris and have had it for years pretty diverse and I know what I'm doing. My situation is I don't want to leave my main computer running 24/7. What are my options that I can still use blue iris and store the videos somewhere else?

But you would be OK leaving an NVR on 24/7?

Do as most of us and don't have BI on your main computer and treat it as an NVR and only do BI on a different computer. Buying another computer would be cheaper than an NVR.

Enough people have shown a newer computer uses less power than an NVR.

One doesn't surf the internet or check email on an NVR, so why should this VMS be any different.

BI wouldn't be able to playback any video not processed by BI if you had BI off and video going somewhere else.

You could put SD cards in the camera and do that instead, but they will only record if they are on lol.

Yes that's what I meant, probably just get another computer strong enough to run the blue Iris program and always could use an external hard drive to steal store video clips if needed. Now that Windows 10 is not going to be supported anymore there's probably going to be a lot of computers out that cannot upgrade to Windows 11, but would it work just fine with blue iris I'm assuming?

Oh OK lol.

People are running BI on 3rd and 4th gen computers they picked up free or for $25 at a County auction. One is running 30+ cameras on one.

People here run BI on Win7.

As long as the computer is just being used for BI, the risk is minimal for a Windows version no longer supported. The computer still has antivirus on it, which is more than an NVR has.

It is only when you start surfing the net and clicking on webpages and stuff that have viruses in it to exploit older windows that the problem happens.

But you can pick up an 8th gen that will run Win11 on ebay off a business lease for the $100ish range.

I think that's exactly what I'll do. as I am not worried about security because all my cameras are outdoor I don't care who sees my yard. I'll just pick up another system and install Blue Iris on that and hook that to one of my three monitors.
.I guess that would leave me into my next question. as I have blue iris version four is there any way to get it from one computer to another? or will I have to upgrade Blue Iris?

If you still have the .exe file, or I think you might be able to go into the main BI setting and tell it to download the current version. Then make sure you have the code and then deactivate it from that computer and install on the new computer.

Someone else might have another way.

Or clone that drive and put it in the new computer and delete off everything you don't want on that computer?
