What's the best mid-priced LPR IP cam that you recommend?

Is it bullet cam or is there a reasonable turret cam? Maybe the new Dahua 4MP varifocal turret cam?

What distance?

Good question.....

I live in a small 65 house community with single entry dead end main road I live on. One way in and out. Was thinking of mounting in tree that's 6 feet off the road looking toward the entrance. I'd put it 10 feet off the ground to discourage some doofus from slapping the camera. Depending on the angle from tree down to license plat I imagine it could be as close as 30 to maybe 100 feet range.

You won’t generally get much more than. 35-40 ft from a standard VF turret or bullet with a 12mm max lens.

The 5241 Z12 is still the gold standard for cost effective LPR out to 150+ ft

Only 5mm - 12mm

Hard to say. Its about distance, angle, and getting enough IR on target. If 12mm zoom is all you need, then there are more cost effective choices.
There's no huge advantage to 4MP vs 2MP for LPR really. There's certainly no advantage whatsoever to turrets over bullets for LPR. The Z12 gives you flexibility that normal VF cameras to 12mm dont.

Z12 at 100ft ad 120ft

5442 bullet VF max'd out 12mm zoom from 80ft to capture point. No way this is good for LPR at that distance. You might get some, but not reliably day and night
