Omada (by TP Link) seems to be catching up with the competition
Too many design elements, especially the packaging, copy Ubiquiti :eek:
 
I've always noticed how the Omada line seems to mimic what Ubiquiti offers but at roughly have the price. Funny how the software process is also close and how the packaging seems very similar. Makes me wonder if the products are somehow linked. Does one company make the other's products or is one just copying the other? You look at a product from Ubiquiti and Omada would have a version with a similar form factor. With that being said, I have talked to some integrators that have made the switch to sell Omada instead of Ubiquiti due to pricing.

Competition is healthy
My only gripe with Omada is that it is essentially TP-Link
 
I have limited person experience with both. I have previously set up some Ubiquity APs at my house, and some Omada APs at my parents house. I had failures with both.

The Ubiquity hardware controller's battery swelled and became dangerous to use. Historically Ubiquity's update's were more like forced beta testing as well and every update seemed to break about as much as it fixed. I believe this has gotten better with time however.

I also had a Omada AP fail after several years (I was running several units).

Long story short, I would recommend the Omada over Ubiquity, but I am not using either in my home network currently.
 
I have been using Ubiquiti for my network. I feel as with all companies that there are good and bad products. The most important is to do the research before picking something up. For example, I still have my Unifi AC LR, AC Lite and AC Mesh that has been in service for over six years. No issues ever with those AP. Have a U6 Pro that went out after a year. Seems that those have issues with the fans inside where they would burn out the AP eventually. Got some U7 Pros that have been in use for two years and all is well.

Yeah, the Ubiquiti CloudKey Gen2+ DID have issues with the battery swelling. I have one and after about three years the POE power input on the port went out. It would only power on with a USB C adapter. I opened it up and removed the battery. It was fine until last week when I finally replaced it due to it crashing consistently which I guess is from age. This unit I have been running for six years.

I feel as far as updates it would depend on what settings you have it set to.

I have all my devices set to use "Official" updates only. Didn't want to be the beta tester which would be the other two options.

I have my network to official updates only as well, but I still feel like we are guinea pigs for Ubiquiti

I think they both do the same thing (abstract L2 networking into L3, blending the definitions of subnets and VLANs for easy networking).

The biggest problem with both is that they are extremely limited for IPv6 (no NPT, no acceleration) and if you’re hosting P2P media (cameras, intercoms), carriers moving to CGNAT for IPv4 should be among your biggest future concerns.

You’re really just buying a network UI which in the age or coding agents isn’t all that useful. If you’re already running a home server, segmentation cost a $10 NIC. In 2026, even the cheapest Walmart consumer network systems are rock solid and support device isolation from both LAN and WAN independently.

That's a very good point you make there; I have multi-gig WAN, and IPv6 isn't even available for that speed tier, but I know that once it becomes available, I will want to enable it on my UniFi gateway; but even then Ubiquiti's support for IPv6 is extremely limited at this time.
 
I've actually been running both UniFi and Omada at home for WiFi for about the last 3.5 years. At one point the user interfaces were so shockingly similar you would think they both reskinned the same base product to make them.

The only Omada device I have is the TP-Link EAP660 HD (which is a high-end WiFi 6 access point) and it has been unquestionably the best stable high performing access point I've ever had. I also like that it can be configured standalone via its own web interface without an Omada controller installation. Makes it easier to recommend to others who might not want to run special management software for their wifi. The only downside to my EAP660 HD in my opinion is that it is only WiFi 6. Not 6e or 7. Which means it has no 6 GHz radio.

I don't know what makes the EAP660 HD better than every UniFi access point I've ever tried (several models from the original UniFi AP to the U7-Lite). I would guess they used better chipsets, but information on the chipsets used in wifi access points is scarce. I even tried UniFi U7-Pro which couldn't beat my EAP660 HD for Virtual Desktop VR game streaming to a Meta Quest 3. The EAP660 HD on 5 GHz still had better latency and jitter than the U7-Pro on 5 GHz or 6 GHz with only one client device on the wireless network.

Try the U7 XG and E7 AP
