Got anybody luck with configuring VPN on demand with the iDMSS app?
I’ve got VPN on demand working with my iPhone with several apps and Safari. Only with the iDMSS app the tunnel is not started.

Hey Dennis

One of my client when he use idmss or easy4ip remotely, it becomes very slow. Though he has fast upload 17-19 mbps. Do you think it has been attacked or not? Any idea?

Hey Andy,
I don’t use easy4ip, because the only cloud I trust is my own
Depends on what he has configured in iDMSS and on how much cams he’s watching.
I use the substream for remote viewing. Actually I only have 5mbps upstream. But even with 20mbps it would become slow if you are going to monitor more than 4-5 channels in mainstream, depending on codec and bitrate you use. I configured mine to use h.265 and 4Mbps VBR.

Just a thought and possibly off topic.

I have a 100/50Mbps internet connection and was not totally satisfied with my VPN throughput with my hap ACrouter as the number of cams increased, even though it is an awesome piece of hardware.

A few months ago I upgraded my router to the new MikroTik hEXas it has IPsec Hardware encryption chip that supports ~470Mbps tunnels. Now remote viewing is as good as local depending on the remote connection speed. That dedicated encryption chip makes all the difference.

BEWARE: MikroTik gear is about the best bang for buck you can buy, HOWEVER it has an extremely steep learning curve even with solid networking fundamentals!

Apologies, if this is off topic but it might be a hint.

Hey Brad, did you try something else over VPN? It might have multiple reasons why your connection seems to be slow. VPN causes of course a little overhead which should not be mentioned, of course it needs cpu time like SquareEyes wrote, and it could possibly slow bandwidth in the mobile network while you are testing. In highly frequented cells sometimes I only got a few MBit, even if I should get up to 300 MBit under best conditions.
But that’s a lot of off topic, I’m hoping to find someone who also uses the VPN on demand feature of iOS and has a solution to get it working with iDMSS (HD).

So you are using only easy4ip and not VPN?
Correct. On the lan the speed is good and the ptz is good as well. But when i switch to the wan or get off the lan the speeds are almost nothing.

It takes almost a minute to pull up the ptz option then when u move it takes about 10-15 secs before the camera moves or at least updates.

Ok, to be honest, i don’t have any experience with easy4ip, because I don’t trust in other clouds than mine, especially not Chinese ones (sorry). I could imagine that the clouds is not the fastest from your site if it’s hosted in China. A neighbor of mine uses a DoorBird. This goes also through the cloud and for me it looks like 3fps
I would always prefer a direct VPN connection to your home. So your data is kept at your home, it’s encrypted and I assume it will be faster.

That’s another topic I think. There are multiple ways to get a vpn up and running. I don’t know your setup, neither your possibilities nor your skills

I use a router with an integrated vpn functionality. If you use a pc for bi 24/7, you might install openvpn on that. Then of course you need to forward the ports for openvpn in your router. Just google for guides to set this up.

When you are connected to your vpn, you can reach everything at you site, including your NVR. Be so kind and ask google about vpn. This thread is almost off topic now…

I’m now interested in this topic, so I’m reviving it. I found out about this “feature” only this morning. I had been using my new Asus router as a vpn server to get to my internal network to view NVR cams. It worked, but you had to remember to start and stop the vpn, or all traffic would go through it which I didn’t want. Then I learned in another topic that my Asus router could act as an OpenVPN server that would only route traffic to my internal network through the vpn. All other traffic would not pass through it. This was much preferred since I didn’t need to remember to turn off the vpn. Now I just stumbled on this vpn-on-demand capability and am very interested. If I understand it correctly, once configured I can forget about it and it will automatically start and stop whenever I try to view my cameras using iDMSS. This would be perfect for my wife as she just wants to use one app to view the cameras.

If I get it figured out and working I’ll update this topic. In the meantime, is anyone currently using this feature? How is it working?

Thanks.

I haven't seen an easy way to get iOS to do "VPN On Demand". It looks like it can be done by using Apple Configurator, Apple Profile Manager, or a MDM to make a Profile that gets installed on the iOS device, but that seems too far out there for 99% of folks.
