The article stated "Mr Ao was identified by cameras at the concert's ticket entrance" so it didn't "picked" him out of a crowd of 60,000 and I am sure the ticket had his row and seat numbers saved on the computer and all the police needed to do is to walk over to that number and arrest him.
 
George Orwells book 1984 was VERY telling of future events, I believe he missed his target by 40 years, By 2024 this kind of tracking will be everywhere and Way more advanced that we have in 2018. Look what the thought police are doing in China right now.

Bill is right, in China, all ticket has name and ID No. on it, the ID may like US driver license No. so can easy know where is he sitting. China is too big, and have 1.4 billions people, if use US way, here will have gun fighting on the street everyday. lol. Though most guys here are very nice .

It can hold a database of hundreds of millions of known faces and can search for up to 200,000 targets from that database at anyone time!

To put it another way, that's enough to hold the faces and details for every passport or photo driving licence holder or arrested person in the UK, which pretty much means it could hold the facial data of every citizen in the UK, especially if those not on the above photo databases had data mined from eg social media. The hundreds of millions capability, depending on the exact number, probably means a US system could hold the facial identities of every US citizen.

I'd call that pretty advanced.

I understand it's also successfully picked people out criminals wearing hats, sunglasses and even scarfs over their lower faces despite normally needing eye and mouth reference points.

I agree with you on this where it can id faces like this what shown in the video, Walmart stores and casinos have a camera system could ID everyone entering and leaving the place. It will alert security when it detect a person entering who is banned from going there.

What I don't think it advanced enough to ID all the faces in a crowd of 60,000 in a short amount of time that lead to arrest like this. If it was advance enough to do this then police will be arresting just about everyone at the stadium with a unpaid traffic tickets easily and make a nice profit for the city which will happen someday. Police here got a camera in the car that can detect all licence plates in view to alert them if someone in range have an unpaid ticket, a warrant or a stolen vehicle.

right now dahua cam can recognize 10 people per second for each

The UK, which probably has the 2nd highest camera per population figure behind China, has had that since 2005 as ANPR. Additionally, in the UK there are cameras on all major roads that read number plates as you drive by and alert the police to the location of any plate that's associated with any wanted vehicle or person.
