Newbie and VPN...

OK.. so thanks to some of you guys I have my Dahua NVR and Cameras up and running.. I'm using Smart PSS on my computer and GDMSS on my phones.. I can receive alerts on my phone and am still fine tuning things..

I am using a new Asus Router with built in VPN and need to know how to make the VPN work.. Will it have an effect on my Login stuff?

Any help would be appreciated..

Will it be possible to have lan access from vpn server to client side ? or only from client to server ?
 
I have openVPN on an Asus router. From the internet I have complete access to all items I have when logged into my home network.
I am not sure how it works when a VPN is hosted inside the home network.

That's what I'm trying to figure out.. I have GDMSS on 2 phones and Smart PSS on my home computer and a laptop..
If I change the ASUS router to OPEN VPN do I still access them all the same way I do now?

I do not know gdmss or smart pss. If the programs run on your home network via WiFi. Then they will run via VPN.

When away from home, you connect to everything exactly the same as when at home.... except you need to start the VPN client first.

Yes Its just like sitting at home on your laptop or when your phone is hooked up to your wifi network, the devices do not know they are on a VPN. Once the VPN client is run and established, you have access to your NVR or if you have a home server or computer you can access it as @looney2ns said.

When VPN is setup, is it possible to have access on server lan side and lan client side at the same time ?
 
I'm not sure I understand you question.

When you fire up the VPN on your remote device, effectively you are logged into your LAN just as if you were there, on your WiFi or Connected via ethernet.

So your VPN-connected device will see your server and the other clients just the same way any other device on the LAN does.

I don't think you'd ever do it, but you could theoretically have the server itself remotely located, connected by VPN. You'd be limited in speed by the network over which you are remotely connected and the speed of the encryption and decryption, but it should work.

We have good 4G in this area, and the router I use is fairly powerful. Plus, I have a fairly recent phone with lots of RAM and a fast processor. So the encryption, decryption, and network are all fast. I see no difference in speed between being right there on my WiFi and being out and about on the 4G when interacting with Blue Iris and the camera systems.
 
OK, maybe an explanation of how I get mine to work may help?

I have my NVR sat on ip 192.168.1.4, when at home I use Ivms4200 on an android device to check it out, in the settings for the app I use 192.168.1.4 to talk to the NVR. My android is given 192.168.1.6 on the network via wifi

If I am OUTSIDE of my network, as in not on the wifi and I try to access the ivms4200 then it fails as it is not able to see that IP anymore...

If I then run my VPN client, it connects my android to my home network, the android client is then able to see the NVR as it is now participating on the 192.168.1.0/24 network, the TUNNEL has been provided by the VPN client, THIS is why you don't need to do any port forwarding as you are effectively ON your network :)

Just to clarify my thought:
- 1st lan (192.168.0.0/24) : VPN server (fix IP address) +SMARTPSS + others pc's
- 2nd lan (10.15.2.0/24): VPN client (dynamic IP address) + 4g modem +Mikrotik router + switch + NVR + Cam + pc's
I can successfully see all my devices located in the 1st lan from 2nd lan
I cannot ping any devices located in the 2nd lan from 1st lan

Maybe some firewall rules will help ?

Hi

1st lan (192.168.0.0/24) the gtw is 192.168.0.254 and 2nd lan (10.15.2.0/24) and gtw is 10.15.2.1
 
2nd lan: mikrotik router is doing the routing, i can ping and connect to 1st lan without issue
From 1st lan, no router just the FAI box

I can have wan access on both
