Can the IPC-HWD5231R-ZE be mounted any higher than the standard 8 to 10 ft. since it has the varifocal lense.

Regardless of the lens, you’ll catch video of tops of heads more so than a much better capture mounted at say 7’. Read the Wiki.

Can it be mounted higher? Yes

Should it? Depends on what you are trying to capture.

Have a look at the following tool IPVM Camera Calculator V3 its a great way of getting an idea of what your camera will see at the height/distance/angle that you are thinking of installing at. Obviously nothing beats testing with an actual camera in the desired location but this will get you in the ball-park.

Long story short, yeah you could mount higher if your target is further away and therefore the angle that the camera views the target is reduced, but this depends on your own circumstances and what you want to capture.

Remember, mounting lower has other advantages than just grabbing someones face when up close. It also gives you a greater line of sight rather than looking at a smaller patch of ground if angled down drastically.

I see, thanks. Will check it out. Adding floor plans seems like a paid feature though.

I think it will work for properties; tight corridors probably less so. Height can be adjusted with the 'show blind spots' function, but it does not seem to give a good facial preview of this. Neat tool nevertheless, thanks.
