I assume the best location for LPR cameras wound be in my front terrace by the side of the road but getting cable there would be a pain.

Any chance I could get by with a camera mounted on the front of my house? The images I've attached are from a full frame DSLR for perspective until I can test with my security cameras.

My camera choices from what I have on hand are;

1 ea. IPC-HFW5231E-Z12E 2MP Starlight WDR IR Bullet Network Camera 5.3mm ~64mm 12x Zoom Lens

1 ea. IPC-HFW5231E-Z5E 2MP Starlight WDR IR Bullet Network Camera 7mm ~35mm 5X Zoom

3 ea. IPC-B5442E-ZE 4MP Starlight+ WDR IR Bullet AI Network Camera 2.7mm ~12mm Motorized

What kind of depth of field can I expect? In other words, If I set up the house mounted camera to get focus on a license plate, will I loose visibility on anyone walking towards my front door or garage?

I'll be able to test in a week or two.

With the speed bump cars need to slow down if not almost stop. I don't have street lighting but I do leave my outside house lights on and will suggest my neighbor starts doing the same.

Thanks.

Not gonna happen shooting from the house with that angle..
@bigredfish is absolutely correct. Running OpenALPR on an nVidia GPU can improve plate recognition from less-than-optimal angles, but in your case you'd be pushing it too far.

Is there any way you can run Ethernet cable down to the shrubbery beds in front of your house? You could mount cameras on the tops of the low stone walls. With some clever positioning beneath the shrubs, most people wouldn't even notice them.

As to cameras, I'd vote for the IPC-HFW5231E-Z12E. Additional zoom capability never hurts.

Beat bet is at the street. Get some direct burial Ethernet and a flat shovel. Makes trenching a line easy. Stomp the shovel down then wiggle it back and forth to “pry” the dirt apart. Push the cable deep into the gap with a broom handle. Then walk along the line to press the dirt back together. That’s what I did to get low voltage to my flag pole. I’ll be doing the same to get Ethernet to my shed for a camera.

Thank you. How deep did you dig? I need to watch for my irrigation lines and who knows what else. I'm not sure I really need a true LPR, with the cars needing to stop or slow way down for the speed bump standard video feeds may do.

Only 6-8 inches or so. I have irrigation as well and typically have the luck where I accidentally find them by cutting through them.. happened when I put in the flag pole a few years ago. Thankfully I didn’t hit any this time! And when I do, they are easy to fix.

I was surprised at how much of a difference the angle of the camera makes. I put a light pole in 10 feet from the curb and put the Z12 on there. Initially I had it pointing to a spot about 20 feet down the street from the pole. I pushed it out as far as the zoom could read and now I’m hitting 99% of the plates. It catches cars as they pass the end of the neighbors driveway in the below pic. Note the Z12 is on the opposite side of the pole. The cam in the foreground is being replaced with another Z12. Already have it, just need to take the time to swap it.

Everyone on here was a huge help in tweaking my settings and adjusting the angle to get where I am now. So thanks again to all the awesome people on this forum!
