Hi everyone, this is my first post here. I have been reading through this forum and there is a lot of information to sift through, but I could not find anything for using LPR technology simply for access control. Judging from what I have read OpenALPR seems to be one of the best software to use.

Does anybody have any suggestions for a camera or just camera specs I would need to use LPR technology to gain access? The camera would not be more than 25-30 feet away but probably closer than that distance. The vehicles would either be moving extremely slow or at a complete stop when the camera would capture the license plate.

Also, if there is any other software options that would be better or an alternative option to OpenALPR, please let me know.

Wouldn’t any camera work so long as you can read the plate? You would have to do some programming behind the scenes to integrate with OpenALPR. You’d have to pull the plate via their API after capture and then feed that into whatever program you are using for access control. It will take some custom programming.

That was part of my question. I really wanted to know what the minimum requirements would be for a project like this. A cheap but reliable camera.

It seems the HFW5241E series are the goto cams for LPR here. They come in different zoom levels depending on the distance required. Andy here and Empire carries them.

I would like to install one of these but would prefer a turret.
A turret would be fine if a max of 4-5x zoom would work for you. I would think at only 25 feet several of the 2MP Starlight Turrets would be fine. Here is the one that is used quite a bit on this forum from Andy. Has a 5x zoom which should work for your distance.

I’m using the IPC-HDW5231R and I don’t think it has enough zoom. Thanks.

So what do you want then? You gotta move to a bullet if you want more zoom. Or a larger dome PTZ.
