I have one, FYI its NOT a starvis sensor so I'm wondering why they are calling it starlight. Perhaps its the technology in it that defines that term, I guess I might have thought at one time its needs to be a Starvis sensor for the description. I called Dahua USA and confirmed this so buyer beware.

That's a heckuva deal for someone in the market for a dome. Thanks mat200.

FWIW, even the PDF spec sheet on the Dahua site supplied by mat200 says it is Starlight. If it must say "Starvis" somewhere as suggested by chris527 then there is a need for clarity on this for all of our collective understanding.

I guess if it's not, B & H would have to take it back, right? :idk:

When they hit B&H a few weeks back, I called my USA Dealer and got one coming, I was wondering why so cheap and now we know, In the spec sheet it does NOT claim Starvis, it just says "Progressive scan" and I got a e-mail back from Dahua USA confirming this. The top line on that spec sheet says "Progressive scan" All other Starlite modes clearly claim "Starvis. Hope this helps.

chris, thanks for the info.
Yeah, someone is really muddying the waters on this and it's going to backfire...maybe not immediately but down the road, so they need to resolve this very soon, IMO.

As they say, if something sounds too good to be true, it usually isn't and under $55 for such a perceived bargain is beginning to sound like it falls in that realm, unfortunately.

Here's a portion of the spec sheet that caught my eye with the "Starlight", not the missing "Starvis" where it should be in place of "progressive Scan", as you stated.

@Arjun also has one of these and did some testing, He posted in thread about this a few week back here and has some inside pics, Due to weather and laziness I have not done any testing yet.

My understanding is at one time only the only starlight models had the Starvis sensors as well as meeting certain lux ratings.

Recently I have been seeing some models marked as starlight from Dahua that do not use the Starvis sensor. Suggesting that it is now some sort of "standard" which is looser than we initially thought.

They are claiming "Starlight Technology" Whatever is defining that. I guess I will really have to get off my sorry arse later and do a test outside and see what the stars look like through this puppy.

Dahua says it has Enhanced Starlight Technology.

Here is where Enhanced Starlight Technology is defined. Click on Enhanced Technology on the bar down the page.

Here are all the cameras with Enhanced Starlight Technology:

I have a N22AL12, but have only tried it on the bench. Too cold and rainy out there.

IIRC "Starlight" is simply a marketing term Dahua uses to denote a low light capability of .009 or better.
I think the Starvis sensor just happened to be the first that got us all excited about low light capability cameras. A Dahua camera doesnt have to have a Starvis sensor to be considered 'Starlight"

Consider the newish 2231T-AS-S@ with a min lux rating of .002 @F1.6

...and the favorite Starlight 5231 only has a lux rating of .005 @F1.6

By spec and indeed by tests here , the 2231-As-S2 is likely a better low light camera than the now dethroned 5231

and FWIW I just installed a 2231T-ZS-S2 and this $52.50 B&H N22AL12 and i'm scratching my head wondering why my 2231 isn't looking better at night. I'm still tweaking the settings but so far this "enhanced starlight" camera may be a game changer for the US market, i can see future box store cams making a big deal about it. and here's a copy straight from the white papers on the N22AL12 about enhanced starlight:

Starlight Technology For challenging low-light applications, Dahua’s Enhanced Starlight Technology offers best-in-class light sensitivity, capturing details in low light down to 0.005 lux. The camera uses a set of optical features to balance light throughout the scene, resulting in clear images in dark environments.

I think everyone forgets the 2231 is a vari-focal turret, and the N22AL12 is not and it's domed. IR reflection in domes can be hard to deal with. The greater flexibility with the 2231 in challenging installations is well worth it. Buying cameras should not solely be based on the images the camera produces. Dialing in a camera with settings, is essential to getting identifiable images.

i'm not sure about all domes, but this one has a rubber gasket sealing off the lens from the done, the IR is on the outside ring so there's no distortion and no clear dome lens interference from what i can tell. so far the N22 looks better than the 2231 with no IR, maybe it was the moonlight, still need to tinker with settings.

Hi @funkybunch

note: The dome and rubber will eventually decay, especially when exposed to heat and UV. So, this needs to be considered in deployments.

gotcha, it's a cheap experimental camera honestly. bought it due to price and a varifocal to try and determine if i need 2.8, 3.6, 6mm etc in other locations but i'om having a hard time figuring out where the camera is at. some will display on the screen the amount of zoom, or in the app you can select 2.8, 3.6, and it will change the varifocal but i can't find an app or program that displays this, do you know of one? tinycam app doesnt do it for me, too many ads, won't let me view my cameras remotely, etc.
