HFW5242H-Z6E-MF for LPR

I bought a HFW5242H-Z6E-MF hoping to do LPR, but this is at full zoom:


Do you think a 5241E-Z12 would make the difference given this shot is 48mm on a 1/1.8” sensor?

Here is what the IPVM calculator shows for a 5241E-Z12 - distance appears to be about 140 feet. Would you try to bring it closer or do you think the angle wouldn't work? Any general recommendations?

A few shots of the plates you are getting that you say are not working out would help.

I have two 5241E-Z12E cams being used for LPR. One is set at 52mm and the focus target is at 100 feet.



The angle is the cam in light blue pointed ENE.

Here is what I'm getting - it's not terrible but is it good enough for ALPR? I just set this up yesterday so I don't have night settings working yet.

The Z12 will absolutely give you a closer shot at that distance.

You would be surprised how much angle you can get and software still read the plate.

Take that image and upload it to Plate Recognizer and I suspect it will read that plate.

You should strive to have a tighter FOV, but if it works, go for it.

I think I have it working now - getting good reads day and night but will tweak it some more. When I went to get sample images after posting this, they actually were coming out better than my earlier ones so yes, these are looking good at this point!

Here are my settings so far to help the next guy since I had trouble finding great examples of working settings.

At night I was getting overexposed, white with no letters for the plates then finally realized - to my amazement at this distance - I was getting too much IR light - so the fix was the Illuminator settings.

What happens if you turn the illuminator all the way up, and increase the speed of your shutter to say 1/4000?

Wow. You are getting white out at 1/4000. That's some awesome low light sensitivity there. Try going even faster on the shutter. 1/8000 or even more until you can read the plate again.

I should also make a declaration here. I'm considering buying one of these to replace an existing cam doing LPR and I'm really curious as to how much shutter speed these things will run with only the onboard IR in the real world.

Change exposure to manual shutter with time 0.0005 to 0.0005 to get access to the gain control - at your setting the camera is adjusting the gain and has opened the gain wide open which is why you have that happening.

I think you mean 0.5ms, which is 1/2000



0.0005ms is 1/2000000s. Zero motion blur though.

My bad LOL. Wasn't next to machine to pull up the timing, but yes that would result in zero motion blur LOL.
