I came home today and was wondering where my trash cans were. I put them out on the curb Tuesday morning and figured someone else maybe put them back up against the garage. Well no one knows where they are. I have cameras all over my house but never got one over the driveway or pointing out to the yard.

Well I told wife about it and she flipped out and told me that it was bull##% I had all these cameras but nothing caught it. Going to call the trash company in morning and see if someone took them on accident since they are the same brand the trash company leases but they dont have their name on it..

I luckily had my house number on heavy duty stickers on the lid of one. Guess I will look for them on my normal patrol in the city while I am at my real job.

Bull#%#% I say

Sucks they were the nice toter brand heavy duty trash cans that have lasted for over 5 years without problems.

Are you a cop? I say your wife just gave you permission to buy enough cameras to cover every remaining spot of your property.

None of the other cameras cover the street or front of the house? Maybe you can catch them walking away with them?

They cover all the entry points into the house. Was waiting to install the ptz over my driveway. Can't find a way to make it level on my slanted soffit though

Sorry to hear. Sounds like another camera facing the driveway is in order.

Begs the question: what do they cover?
Yeah, PTZ is cool but unless you intend to watch it all day long or hire a guard to scan the yard all day, you really need fixed cameras that cover everything and then add a PTZ for you to hop on after an alert to maybe get a better look at things or zoom in and get a good shot of someone's face. - Just my humble opinion.

I watched the trash truck coming down the street towards my house but my front door camera only has a small portion of the road.

Turns out we believe the trash company took it. Evidently they thought it was their cans because they were the same brand even thought they were different sizes. We are currently researching it with them.

None the less I better get some driveway cameras ordered before she changes her mind. Lol

I would like to stick with Dahua so I may go with a Dahua bullet or two and put the PTZ on back burner unless someone wants to buy it

I'm ashamed to say it but I was thinking of switching to empire security for my main supplier because of the lower prices. I have one empire security IP camera in the back yard and the rest are eyesurv analog cameras along with a hikvision IP camera on the back porch that I am testing out but will have to probably install on Tuesday at a hotel.

They are hooked up to an analog/ip hybrid empire security nvr which I actually do like after learning the interface.

After arguing with empire security because I refused to let him log into my computer to fix the dvr I decided I was not going to order anything from him again. I may have saved some money but it was not worth it in the long run.

Nellys has much, much better service

There are some people who love empire, I think those people are just cheap, I like the adjustments on the varifocal cameras but never tried one. I own 2 hikvisions, a 2032 and the varifocal version and I love them both, they blow the 1080p of the empires away. I got both from nellysecurity and yeah they cost more but they are pretty competitive with everything else out there. The varifocal isn't too bad to focus if you do it enough but I wish it were auto focus. You can save money if you order from China but it takes forever and can be sketchy and costly if you have a problem unless you order a bunch of cameras at a time. I know 2 guys who have analog systems, one is swann, dunno what the other is. They are what made me get into cameras, after I got robbed. I prefer IP cameras and being able to piece my system together. Currently running blue iris on a desktop someone gave me and using the android app. I am storing everything directly to my microsoft one drive account, getting ready to order camera #3, probably going to get another varifocal even though they cost so much more, being able to zoom in and out really gives you flexibility in being able to place the camera in a good spot for it AND get the coverage you want of an area. I bought the 2032 to play with the fixed focus just to see how I like them, it works pretty well for the back porch, it's 4mm, but I don't think would work so well in a lot of situations and I don't want to have to guess what focal length I need, varifocal costs more but takes out the guess work and can be moved around later and just be re-adjusted. Having a hard time shelling out another $300 though, stupid overpriced security cameras.

Situational overviews can help too. Sometimes you just need the story, without needing positive ID. The good part about that is you point a 3.6 and get a wide area covered and there you have it, easy. I had a thing last year where I put plastic landscape fence on my cans and planned on coming back to put it up. Being the lazy person I am, they sat there for weeks. Then when I finally got around to doing it, fence gone. It didn't take long to find out what happened. The guy apologized and gave it back. He thought it was garbage. I considered not putting a camera on the can side of the house because I was forced to put it higher than I wanted. In the end, my overview cameras have been very useful. It's a combination that covers everything.

I like varifocal but you can almost get two cameras for the price of a variable focus one and get one that has a higher zoom if you have a key area. I agree that a good overall picture is nice to have then have a camera zoomed in on a key area like a door, car or something

I was thinking about that the other day, I MIGHT get some cheaper cams for covering the empty parts of the front yard and out in the street and all just so I can see what is going on but not necessarily identify a face. Mostly just because cameras are so damn expensive, well good ones. Save the more expensive ones for covering the areas in front of door and windows. Good for "situational awareness" then the higher res cameras can cover smaller areas but get very high quality shots of faces etc. Love your PTZ by the way.

True, super high res cameras everywhere would be nice but if you don't have super deep pockets, having low res coverage of empty areas like out in the middle of the yard is good enough.

The only thing I worry about is my cars (now trash cans) and entry points into the house. I have the empire security camera pointed at my shed in the back yard. If you ever are in the market for a empire security hybrid dvr I can sell mine lol. I have an eyesurv Ion that I bought for a customer but ended up he didn't want it so now I'm stuck with it.

I'm currently rocking Blue Iris and the android app and I'm pretty happy. I fought with ZoneMinder for like 2 weeks before I got fed up and paid. I don't really care for the purpose built DVR's myself but maybe I'm just too nerdy. :)

Space usage right now is pretty much nothing doing recording only on motion detection, when you try to do 24/7 recording then yeah, you start to get in to some serious storage needs.
