With traffic around here, I am burning up a lot of hard rive space. The NVR is a nvr8-7400. It has a 2 TB drive in it now. In the literature it shows upgradeable to 6tb. Is that a software max or drive size at the time of production? No way to go larger?

What would be best, replace the 2TB with a 6TB? Add an External 4TB? I have not opened the case to see if there is room for a second drive. Small case so doubt it.

Also what is a good (and compatible) brand/model of hard drive to buy?

Hmm, Back of box uses an ESATA connector. WD Purple ESATA drives max at 4tb from what I found. And they sure are expensive.

Since no replies yet... I have found I can upgrade the unit to 6TB. A 3TB internal and a 3TB external. A 3TB SATA drive can be put in a Esata case and used externally. Should get me by for now. BTW need to format the drive after hooking it up for the unit to use it.

Just sharing my own experience. My NVR4-7285 (4 cameras) accepted a 4TB Seagate Skyhawk without issues.

As a precaution, I upgraded the firmware via USB before ordering a new drive. Approx 13MB and just needed a FAT32 formatted USB drive. The whole system felt more responsive and reliable.

The drive was easy to install. I switched off at the wall, waited 20 seconds for all lights to fully go out, unplugged. I removed the 6 edge screws and slid off the lid. Loosened the 4 HDD screws and swapped the drive.

Once installed, I had to init / format the new drive to start recording. All other settings were fully retained.

The new drive is slightly louder than the original 1TB Seagate Surveillance but not unbearably so.
