Anybody else noticed a memory leak on v5.8.0.5 ?

BI is currently using 22gb of RAM and counting. It crashed completely yesterday and i suspect the same will happen again.

Insure that you....
  • Disable Intel hardware acceleration
  • Do not use Intel hardware encoding on any of the streaming profile configurations
  • Reboot BI server if you made any changes to either of the above settings

Thanks for the advice, but why ? Has there been a new issues identified with intel hardware acceleration ? I've been using it for months without a problem.

I updated at 2:45p yesterday, and have experienced no memory leak (yet). I rebooted immediately after updating.

Please just check and try my suggestions and also insure you're using sub streams and if no joy, we can go to the next thing to try.
It could also possibly be an issue with the video driver.

Thanks, i'm just going to downgrade for now. Someone else has confirmed the exact same issue on the blueiris forum so i'm sure it'll get sorted soon enought.

Hardware acceleration isn't needed anymore. That was only needed back before substreams were introduced. The substreams allowed other CPUs without QuickSync to be used. For kicks I disabled it and deleted the driver and my system ran fine LOL.

Around the time AI was introduced in BI, many here had their system become unstable with hardware acceleration on (even if not using DeepStack or CodeProject). Some have also been fine. I started to see that error when I was using hardware acceleration several updates into when AI was added.

This hits everyone at a different point. Some had their system go wonky immediately, some it was after a specific update, and some still don't have a problem and HA is decreasing their CPU% usage, but the trend is showing running hardware acceleration will result in a problem at some point, especially if using CodeProject - depending on the number of cameras using HA and number of cameras using CodeProject, you could be maxing out the GPU.

However, with substreams being introduced, for many people the CPU% needed to offload video to a GPU (internal or external) is more than the CPU% savings seen by offloading to a GPU. Especially after about 12 cameras, the CPU seems to go up by using hardware acceleration. But of course, some will see a CPU improvement by enabling it.

My CPU % went down by not using hardware acceleration. Here is a recent thread where someone turned off hardware acceleration based on my post and their CPU dropped 10-15% and BI became stable.

But if you use HA, use plain intel and not the variants.

As always, YMMV.

Thanks for the info. That's useful to know. In this instance however, it's a new bug. Downgraded to the last stable version and memory is now static at 3.2GB (note i have 20 cameras!)

Well just keep it in mind. As CodeProject gets more robust, depending on the GPU, the capabi may be exceeded trying to do hardware acceleration and CodeProject.

In my situation, my CPU dropped and make times improved by turning off hardware acceleration. YMMV.

The leak is on 5.8.0.4 & 5 I went back to 5.8.0.1 and its not there. Ken is aware of the issue.

I've been running 5.8.0.4 since it came out without issues. FWIW I don't use any AI...

I don’t use CP either.
It appears to be related to CP or just motion, not sure. I can update and run 5.8.0.5 at night and the memory usage is stable, but once daylight comes and with more motion it continues to grow.

You might be onto something, I only use BI motion detection in 3 of me cams which are clones.

All my cams are set to detect and trigger using the cams internal tripwire or appear rules.

Updating post #4 … I’m now running 5.8.0.5 and I’ve still experienced no memory leaks. I use CP. Also use both ONVIF triggering for some cams, and BI motion detection for others.

Are you using hardware acceleration for the cameras?

Ok, so early this morning I went back to 5.8.0.5 and it has ran all day with NO memory leak ?? I could of jumped the gun on first time around by not doing a full windows reboot which is the only thing I did on this test differently. I normally try to do that on every update, but must of been in a hurry. Anyway looks good so far.
