VPN Setup Issue

Greetings,

I have an NVR that is plugged into my ASUS RT AX5400 router. The router gets internet from an Arris Surfboard SB6183.

I am trying to do the right thing by setting up a VPN to access my NVR outside of my home network. I have setup an IPSec VPN on the router which appears to be working. I am using IPSec because it is one of the supported options on my iPhone. The other options are PPTP, OpenVPN, and WireGuard, but I haven't explored those yet because I don't see them as supported on the iPhone.

I can disconnect my iPhone from WiFi, connect to the VPN, but am not able to access the login page for my NVR. I can access the login page for my network-connected printer, so I know I have access to my LAN through the VPN.

I've looked through my NVR's settings and have ensured the gateway listed points to my router. Is there something I am missing that I should check?

I have the same setup and use OpenVPN. You have to download the OpenVPN app on your IPhone.
1. Login to your router on a computer in your home and setup the OpenVPN on it.
2. While on your WI-FI on your IPhone, go to a web browser and login in your asus router.
3. Go to the OpenVPN under the router settings and download the link to your FILES folder on your IPhone.
4. Open the OpenVPN app on your phone and then find the OpenVPN file that you downloaded and it will create the OpenVPN.

The OpenVPN advice you provided worked perfectly!

Second question, since you run the same hardware I do... How did you configure your router to ensure the NVR is not gaining internet access?
Under Firewall tab, I clicked 'Network Services Filter'...
Under the 'Deny' list, I entered my NVR LAN IP but did not list a port range (for both TCP ALL and UDP). I assume this will block all ports?

I don’t remember on that for sure. I was always told to not enable P2P on the NVR or cameras as that is what will increase the risk of being hacked. Therefore, I never enabled it.

+1^^.
Also disable any "UPNP" (Universal Plug 'n Play) on cams and NVR as it can open ports in your router without you knowing or permitting it.
