My cameras have audio, they are good enough to catch gunshot sounds, car crashes and all those really loud sounds. But when people are talking it is pretty much just mumbling, diffficult to pick up what they are saying unless they are like 5 meters or less from the camera.

So are surveillance microphones a thing?

Be sure you have turned off the "noise filter" in the cameras GUI.

I use several of these ( ) next to my exterior cameras and they sound much better than my camera’s built in microphones. It’s easy to make out conversations with the external microphone, but nearly impossible with the built in ones.
I have a few of those in the field. They do work well. I always add a dead cat to the setup to filter the wind noise.

Here is another microphone I have been using lately. This one has excellent audio and is weatherproof.

What dead cat do you like to use on the Microsevens?
I don't have a link to the exact model, but any deadcat that will fit over a 1/2" microphone. Secure it with a nylon wire tie. I have never found one that is rated for outdoor use but usually get about 6 months out of a new one. I have also had a few microphones destroyed when a animal of some sort tried to have it's way with it.
