I was rear ended going 60 miles an hour, the guy who hit us was over the speed limit. He came to my truck after hitting us and said did you stop in the street. I said no how did you not see us. I had just checked my rear view mirrors and there was no one behind me. Thats how fast this guy was going. At the moment of impact while my sister was screamin. I was thinking was there someone behind me with no lights on. Because like i said i had just looked in my mirror and i saw no one there. He told the cops I slammed on my breaks to break check him. I showed the officer on scene the dashcam video front and back and he was given multiple citations. I wish they had a citation for liars because he would have recieved that too.

Just glad i was in a truck, his speed would have surely left us dead or injured if we were in a sedan. The impact broke the driveshaft off the transmission. I also had both hands on the steering wheel. None of that look ma no hands driving BS.

Many years ago I was rear-ended going 70 mph on the Autobahan. I saw the car approaching a couple of seconds before impact and floored the go pedal, which probably didn't actually help much. No debate about whose fault it was with the other driver admitting he was distracted. My car was a brand new BMW. I was the 2nd renter since it was new. Wasn't close to totaled , still driveable with a bunch of ugly damage on the back end.

I bought a new SUV a month ago. It has a backup, lane assist, and an interior camera pointed at the driver, but I cannot access any of the video which I am sure is stored somewhere upon a collision to absolve the automaker from any liability. I had to install my own separate dash camera.

When the shock wears off you're sure going to be embarrassed when you realize you were holding your phone the wrong direction taking those pics and videos later.

Yes, a lot of the new cars have lots of cameras that record on an impact. I have a BMW with 4 cameras around the car, and they will record on impact. I read the BMW forum and a member had a severe wreck, but could not get any video, because the car was completely dead. You absolutely need a separate Dashcam with an SD card, so you can retrieve video. The car makers are always one step behind on technology. Glad to see the OP had a rear view camera (good video), that's where they trouble comes from these days from distracted drivers.

The cameras in cars now record on the ECM, but you can't get the video without getting the company involved and probably the police will get it.
The only one I have heard about around here was when a kid killed a family, the police got it and found he was going 100+ along with being in the wrong lane.

Tesla has a way to download their videos, there is a guy on u tube that posts a lot of his close calls.

This is for all the naysayers that say that Dashcams are for lunatics. A Dashcam should be required in every vehicle (Front and Rear) PERIOD. @djernie Make sure you keep an on your health; keep that dash cam footage saved and hold onto the insurance papers of the driver that rear-ended you.

Yesterday I was in a rest area on I-10 in TX and had an 18wheeler hit my mirror. Never stopped, just kept on going. Just cosmetic damage and had to get out and loosen it to re-align it. That took about 30 minutes. This is the guy as seen on my dash cam.

I had this happen in front of me on the interstate, yesterday. It could have been bad.



I am not sure what type of license plate frame they had, but between that and their speed, it is near impossible to get anything from their license plate. Best I could do to get this was to take a snapshot from VLC. Any better options for getting stills?
