Want to see your household monitoring pics (tablet, TV, monitor in kitchen, etc.)

I'm hoping to see the different ways people have installed something to monitor their cams in a household setting, like a tablet, little screen in the kitchen/hall, etc.. I'm looking for ideas and want something non-intrusive, professional/finished look, something you can glance at as you walk past and see what's up on the cameras that doesn't have wires running up the wall, etc.

Thanks in advance!

Your best bet is going to be a tablet of some sort. Wether it's an iPad or Galaxy tablet. I pesonally use samsung galaxy tablet and it's great. Main two options are Blue Iris or NVR. For my NVR clients I run NVMS7000.

What I would love to see are some clean/professional installs. There's gotta be some around and I'm hoping they'll help spark an idea for my house.

RasPipC.tv :D

personally I think tablets are lame to attach to a wall.. I think its a cultural side effect of a few generations of Star Trek nerds.. We all got our tablets and storage devices that can hold all the worlds knowledge on our fingernail.. so now we want touchscreen interfaces on all the walls so we can just hurry up and get to the future.

IMHO, StarTrek got that part wrong.. There are few things more awkward than trying to use a touchscreen flat against the wall at light switch height.. and it dont look cool either.

personally id rather have sliding doors that make a "swish" than have to get my ass up off the couch or out of bed and interface with a wall... whereas if I didnt attach the tablet to the wall I could just interact from the couch/bed.

What we all really need are some Pip-Boys, then there would be no need for displays :D

Thanks nayr. I should have specified that it'd be cool to see the install in terms of how it looks in the room it's in vs. just a closeup of a monitor. And what is that NSA microchip dongle gadget you got on the back of that monitor? Does it self destruct? :)

Its a Raspberry Pi, its a $35 computer.. Ive got a big project started around this, see the thread for more info: https://www.ipcamtalk.com/showthread.php/9604-RasPipC-Cameras-on-your-TV-made-Easy

Here is a further out view, this is my mudroom.. that window thats overexposing everything is the front door.. normally you cant see any wires but today I have a RFID card reader (RED LED) I am testing out so you can see it just laying out until I get it functioning.

I'm not racist @fenderman but that's still too white unless it's snowing pretty heavily... :)

To me mounting a dedicated monitor just isn't feasible these days. I can understand running a cat5 hdmi to a main tv just as a backup since it's already there.

Why isn't it feasible? Add-on decoding options for a standard TV are fairly easily available for $50 and once you hit a hundred or $150 the options really open up, including solutions that handle the decoding themselves and come with a screen such as tablets.

This is just my view. When I do an install when I show the customer the mobility of having there tablet or netbook anywhere in the residence, they place that higher than having one fixed location to view. This is what I myself have experienced. The standard monitor for the nvr is the only fixed monitor they want.

One or more mobile solutions is the sexy modern way to go, but it's not an either/or thing. If there's a good central location for an always-on monitor it's an excellent addition to the system. I had a great spot in my last house that everybody loved. It was easily viewed from the front entrance, kitchen, master bedroom door, and bathroom, and was in the center and got passed by everybody coming upstairs or to the living room. Heard a bang outside? Almost instant knowledge of what it was. Plus, you almost always knew when something was quietly going on in the yard, what the kids were doing outside, what animals were visiting, who just pulled up in a car to visit, etc. I don't have as good a location in my new house so I don't have an always-on central monitor and I really miss it. Wifey wants a TV in the kitchen in addition to the RAM iPad mount (iPads are the new cookbook dontcha know) so I might make that an always-on solution. She can just flip inputs if she wants to watch TV instead and flip back when she's done instead of turning it off.

This type of connection hdmi over ethernet is 100 percent stable and reliable as opposed to wifi and running an app and os. It also doesnt add any more cpu load that multiple clients can add. Lots of folks dont like the clutter of a tablet on the counter/furniture. Also tablets dont come in large sizes (23"). The only downside is that all screens must display the same cameras. Running to a tv is practically useless unless you will have a trigger automatically change inputs..turning on a tv or changing the input takes too much time..its quicker to use a mobile device. These monitors are intended to give you quick access at a glance.

I guess if I have a customer that wants it then great, but I don't offer it in a package.
