As a PC Gamer from Doom/Wolfenstein days I have seen many things happen with PCs, this is not the first time memory prices doubled/tripled as well as chip prices. When Gaming Consoles became popular with the youth due to their low pricing and game support, PC sales started it's decline. So this decline has been going on for a long time now. But Consoles are not cheap anymore. Gaming PCs have never been cheap. When Mining drove up the GPU pricing it never came down, well not to where it was prior. unlike when the Chip prices went up due to manufacturing plants being shut down/slowed down in the pass, their prices went back to reasonable cost. For a long time you could get a good GPU for about $250-300, this is double today, yet CPUs are only about $100 more than a decade or more ago. Our family, 3 of us bought Gen 2 i7 CPU for $200 on sale back in the day, we all built new PCs at the same time, will never forget that, I actually bought two, built 2, one was a HTPC. One family member still has the same PC running today

The Gaming Market is Huge, it will always be around. Billions upon billions. Wow half a trillion in 2025.
Consoles Are PCs, keep that in mind.
There is a cost to gaming, looking at Console prices and comparing them to a low-end gaming PC now a days, there is not much difference, not like in the past were PCs cost 2-3 times more.
What's my point, I have heard many. many. many times that PCs are going away. Maybe one day but when companies stop using them then the PC will die, until then they will be around/available.
Back in my IT days if MACs were not used we built Gaming PCs for our Desktop Publishing Departments which cost double or more than a standard desktop for most workers, Execs always wanted laptops. One of my IT jobs was a Call Center, we had around 300 PCs we were managing...it was a 400 node network...

Also, Memory prices gone up around 500% thanks to AI demand so both memory & storage v. expensive now.

I think it is more closer to 200% increase which is still ridiculous...

This is from a Newegg ad I got yesterday...I get them daily...double them to get 32Gigs, so compared to the above Memory, this Corsair Memory with LED is a better buy:
If I remember right the G.Skill RGB Memory at the time I bought my non-RGB was about $40-50 more...which would make the above Corsair Memory closer to 120% increase. But this is 41600 compared to the faster 48000

Prices have dropped back already albeit only by a small amount. Depends on the kit but large increases. I'm sure I saw a kit somewhere approaching 500% increase but maybe someone was price gouging. Some larger kits in the UK now over £1k!!!
These are the results for 64Mb from a well, known respected UK retailer and this is the current live price after the recent price drops - range from £700-1200 ($ 941 - $ 1,614) and that's for just 64GB!!!
Storage has also been affected eg NVME / M2 drives etc.
Now it looks like Nvidia is concentrating mostly on the AI market with huge pricing.
Building a pc not very viable atm unless you're lucky enough to be in a position of money doesn't matter.

I have read some are going back to DDR4 since it did not increase no where near as much as DDR5 Memory. When I say go back, they are buying motherboards that work with DDR4.

Since this was a major build/upgrade I went with DDR5. In order to do my bench test (Motherboard/CPU/Memory) I had to buy some of the new way over priced DDR5 memory. It was double the cost of DDR4, just like it is today, but it was over priced back then due to short/limited supply.

My build was several thousand of dollars so spending $200 more was not a huge Ouch but it did sting. I waited for prices to go down before buying another 32Gigs...

These Memory prices are not just hurting consumers, small businesses too. Have a family member that worked in the IT dept. of a smaller college here in Texas. Their IT dept. halted many upgrades/additions due to these increased prices, he actually moved out of that dept. hoping to go back one day when prices comes down. I understand, being behind in IT is not good, especially for a young IT guy...
Since we have been told that these prices are here for atleast another year, something tells me they will become the norm and only go down once DDR6 becomes available. But again, I may be wrong...
Another thought, when building a Gaming PC, the GPU is the core of your build. So far, GPUs have not increased much if any in price even though they have Memory on them. If I were to build today I would still get the fastest GPU I could afford, limit system memory, buy a smaller/slower M.2, then IF prices come back down, upgrade those components...what I have found is we tend to think we need a bunch of system memory but for Gaming it does nothing for you, you want has much memory for your GPU that you can afford. I have always added way too much system memory with no benefit. I don't do Desktop Publishing or CAD...now what I do do is Encoding Videos which uses system memory.
BUT, now with Handbrake's hardware encoding, my encoding is done by the GPU and not the CPU. It is extremely fast too. I have a 2070 Super, think a 2060 will work too but not a 1070, already tried. Using NVENC (NVidia GPU) Rocks, I can encode about 4 times faster, just guessing, probably faster than that...it is crazy fast, I can have 6 Handbrake sessions going at the same time...
I actually hating Encoding until NVENC, now I am going back and re-encoding old videos to save space...
