Just to be clear, did you get a non-bricked camera to work (no gibberish) using the serial connection? That would tell me that using the serial connection for recovering the firmware is not possible on a bricked camera based on your first post. Thanks for the info!

Interesting suggestion! Not as easy as an off the shelf app but I am actively testing this. First lesson....no cvlc for windows. That rules out using it with most of my PC's. So it will only be good as a secondary option. I was hoping I could use VLC on windows for viewing live feeds then...

I had this same problem. It actually worked for a while then stopped. Changing to a non-gmail smtp server fixed it. Based on what I read Google will block this kind of use of their smtp servers. Dont blame the software, blame Google.
