Some thoughts on assembling a dedicated LPR system

It was announced a few days ago that BlueCherryDVR has been released 100% Open Source. I don't know what that means for your specific needs, but that appears to be where things stand now.

    new Dahua System recommendation

I'm not finding that camera IPC-HDW2231RP-ZS available at Andy's store. Is there a current equivalent, "go-to" cam?

Re: Help me select hardware: dome cameras; POE switch; monitoring software; storage s To record to the hard drives, he's recommending a stand-alone Network Video Recorder (similar to your cable's DVR): 16ch Dahua Non-PoE NVR (4216-4k)

    Network "Re-Design"

I apologize for hijacking this thread! In my case there are three GigE ports on the router (Apple Airport Extreme). Although I do have an 8 port gig switch connected to it, I don't know what the uplink specs for it are or if there's a bottleneck there. It's a $25 D-Link switch IIRC. I'm not in...

    Network "Re-Design"

That makes perfect sense! (now to go see what the switch in my router really is....)

    Network "Re-Design"

[/INDENT] Hi nayr, why are you moving all connections to the one trunk switch, instead of using the built-in ports of the router? My assumption is that everything else is equal, gig ports etc. I'm not a networking guru, just wanting to understand why one would do this. Could be easier to...

Newbie looking for a system had a breakin

Those are most certainly analog cameras. Pretty much the opposite of what everyone here was suggesting. A stand-alone digital / IP camera set requires more budget for that many cameras. Roughly double, according to some advice you got earlier in the thread.
