Think my switch is dying. So far its has gone dark (showing no connection to my DVR and/or computer) three time in the last week. I have 15 cameras going in (8 4k and 6 2k cameras) and 2 gigabit lines gong out. Maybe this was too much for this system. Granted, I cheap out buying this unit. Amazon review were pretty good. Had no idea what to buy then I purchased it.

Here the rig that giving trouble. Luckily, I’m in the return window with amazon.

I’m writing to see what some member might recommend. Was thinking a refurbished Cisco router.

What do you mean by this ?, are you trying to aggregate 2 links or are they going to 2 other switches ?, You may be creating a broadcast storm due to a loop in the switched network.

Thank you for responding to my inquire.

First of all, I’m pretty much ignorant with it comes to IT issues. So please excuse my ignorance when it comes to IT phrases.

Here is my set up:

Have an 18-port switch. Two of the ports are marked for Gigabit Ethernet uplink. These two ports are attached 1-to my PC, the other to a DVR. System was running fine for 2 months. Then suddenly it seems to stop working. Both computer and DVR showed no uplinks. Rebooting the switch seem to solve the issue. Everything works fine for about a week, then it happens again. This time it failed to uplink both system within a couple of hours. Next time, it only took 30 minutes for it to fail an uplink.

Right now, rebooted the switch, and running only the NVR. Sofar working fine.
Possibly your correct with the idea of a loop in the network might be causing my problems.
Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Thanks again

UPDATE: system crashed just using the NVR. Planning on sending the switch back to amazon

There has been other reports here about BV-Tech switches failing prematurely.
These get good reviews: 16 Ports POE - POE Injectors and Switches - Power Supplies & POE - Nelly's Security

You have all the eggs in one basket.

I use a standard 8 port linksys switch. This switch is connected to one nic card on the BI PC. The switch is connected to 4 - 4 port POE switches, the switched are spread out around the house for easy wiring. All switched and the BI PC are on different UPSs. I have different manufactures for the switches (for no good reason) .

Not meaning to hijack but is there any advantage or benefit in buying a gigabit POE switch as opposed to a 10/100mbs switch?

I wouldn't think you would need anywhere near a GB POE, although it might be worthwhile to have a gigabit port for your BI machine if you are planning to have a bunch of cameras. I have mostly 2MP cameras but with 6 of them my network interface only shows like 2Mbps on the two interfaces on that machine while I am remote viewing it.

I wouldn't spend extra to get a 1GBe POE switch, there's no real need for it imho. That being said I do have a 1 GBe switch for my main LAN (not POE), even before I had a fiber connection it was nice to move files around your network at the faster speeds. But for cameras I think you'll find its just a light video stream.

Been doing more reading. It seems that most up cameras are 10/100Mbs so gigabit POE ports aren’t really needed. What would make sense is as pointed out in the previous post a gigabit uplink connection so that the BI server can talk at full speed. The only other advantage of getting s gigabit POE might be switching capacity/speed and off course future proofing.

OP mentioned 15 cams on his PoE switch with 130w PoE budget. Perhaps it doesn't fail gracefully at the PoE budget limit? eg, at night, when all the cams turn on their IR and increase their power consumption. Next time it's in the 'failed' state, check the 'PoE max' led before rebooting it, if you haven't already...

I think you were right. Return and replaced my switch. Same thing happen after a couple of days (was in a rush to replace it because I was going away for a week) Came back to a dead switch. Rebooted it, all was good for about a week. Then it crashed again. Rebooted it, turned off some IR lights, seems to work fine now. Will update if any changes again. Thanks for the ideas.
Yea, think 15 IR cameras are a wee bit too much for the switch.

That ipc switch quoted above looks like a decent switch with a healthy power budget which a lot of other switches downy have and it’s reasonably priced as well.

I have been getting all my switches from Nelly's as of late, going on a few years now with no issues.
Yeah, even their 8 port has 2 uplink ports, could come in handy depending on topology and help with future expansion. My BV-Tech has 1 uplink. I'll definitely try that IPCamPower next go-around, but hopefully the BVT will serve well until that time comes.

Honestly, the way things are going lately, I think the BVT will outlast me. :(

That don't sound too cheerful but hopefully you will outlast the switch, I also have a BV in my garage that has served well now for a few years.

I just bought the same 18 port BV switch about two weeks ago. I'm running 10 cameras and have the IR turned off on one, so effectively 9 at full night load at the present time. The switch seems to be fine, so far. I do wonder about heat loading on it when I add more cameras. It runs slightly warm right now with the 910 connected and 9 IR light on. I'm budgeting at a guesstimate of 7 to 8 watts per camera. Somehow I think an internal fan would help this switch a lot. We'll see how it does as more cameras are added.
