All of the replies about the 2231 not having a substream are incorrect. It has 1 substream, whereas the 5231 has 2. That said, most don't use the substream(s). I don't.

@aristobrat is this the switch that you use? https://amzn.to/2KejbFd. I read that poe thread, but it seems theres a lot of various opinions. I want something that will work great with my dahua 5231's, has enough power for all of them and possible ptz cams in the future, and will allow me up to 20 cameras. I'm not sure I understand what managed and unmanaged poe switches are though?

For the price of 1 ea. PTZ camera you can you can buy 3 ea. 2231s. Then you will not miss action while panning. Zoom one in, leave one zoomed out for overview and you have a spare.
People dont understand when you own more than a 10x10 square of grass that a fixed turret is pointless if you want to see your entire property.. My 59225 is my favorite and best camera hands down

That makes sense. A few questions. With the 2231's, how far out will they zoom? Also, what is the real difference between the Starlight IPC-HDW5231R-ZE 800 meter capable ePOE and

Dahua IPC-HDW2231RP-ZS Starlight Camera-Varifocal?
If you have a large area of land you want to watch the 2231 isn't gonna be able to see far out.. Sd59225u-hni is my favorite.. ok now I'm ready for the ptz hate you bastards.. hahaha

I have 5 acres that I need to see. There are areas around the perimeter of the home I think the 2231's will work, but I have a large front and backyard I would like to see as well. Can you give me a little insight on how the ptz cams work as far as motion? Do they scan large areas of the property and if they detect motion will they zoom on that object? @Cameraguy, can you tell me why you like the sd59225 over other ones? Thanks!

You leave it on a specific preset and setup ivs with intrusion boxes .. when something enters or leaves those boxes it will activate tracking
Here's my channel. Alot of tracking examples there

I was looking at this PTZ cam for my needs https://amzn.to/2WAueyS. Is this a good camera for my needs? I want auto tracking as well. Also, for around this price range, am I getting the best ptz camera or is it worth it to go up a little bit in price?

Sd49225 doesnt have tracking capabilities.. get the 59225.. if you really want tracking have to go up to 59225..
I've had other ptz auto tracking cameras and they are pathetic to how smooth the 59225 tracks.. have a sunba 805 that auto tracks and it tracks in jerky motion.. I actually dont even use the feature on it.. Im surprised it's still alive.

So I am going to be using the 59225 and some 2231's. I see the 59225 is poe+ What kind of Cat cable would be best? Cat6? I also think I'm going to look into the Unifi line for the switch. any suggestions on that one?

Yea go cat6 that's solid copper. Someone else might weigh in on the switch.. I had 2 cheap 5 port netgear switches die on me within a year.. now running a managed tplink which is going strong so far. Its heavier duty than the netgear was

Yes.

PC, Blue Iris, PoE switch, cameras, and a bunch of cat5e or cat6 network cables (get pure copper cable, don't buy CCA or copper clad aluminum).
I was gonna go synology survellience station, but this setup you mentioned is what I decided to go with from research here on the forums. Seems to be popular for high performance. I love my synology, but after looking at how much licenses were as well, I can buy a separate pc and run blue iris for actually cheaper.

Ubiquiti Networks 8-Port UniFi Switch
I have one of those, just beware they get pretty hot for POE switches, and I can't attest to the durability because I haven't had it very long (it's powering my Unifi cloudkey and unifi AP), but Unifi equipment has a strong following here. Early on I got a recommendation to get an HP POE switch (little 10/100 nothing special) and it's been running all my cameras strong for over 2 years.
