this may be a silly question, but what do we need the Sub-stream for on the Dahua cams??...can we disable it to save CPU on our BI server?

I was considering this camera. Has this issue been resolved? Would need 100% zoom.

What issue?

The focus is still an issue unless you use one of the methods described. Read up

Besides the Sunrise/Sunset utility, you can go old school and simply leave it in B&W 24/7. Use a separate profile using the 'Schedule" for Day/Night so you can adjust exposure for nighttime, but force B&W on both. End of focus problem.

Another simple fix is, by using "Schedule" force the change from color to B&W 45 minutes Before sunset, and chnage back to color 45 minutes After sunrise. This allows the camera to focus while thewre is enough light for it to see something to focus on.

I'm still playing around with the settings for a LPR camera but this is what you get from 250ft away.
I am going to mount the camera on a pole tomorrow and do a full on LPR setup video. But it will only be from 50-75ft away (depending where I point it), not 250ft.

Note: I had to use Dahua day/night switch utility - DahuaSunriseSunset to get the camera to focus fully zoomed in. I'm sure if this was the cameras permanent home I would have to dive more into the utility but it does the job!

Can you help me find a IPC-HFW5231E-Z12E to order? Also, I will be trying to capture plates at 180-190ft so any advice on setup would be greatly appeciated.

The 5231 is an older model and has been replaced with the 5241E-Z12E, so you would have to go to someplace like ebay for a used 5231.

We gave you answers in your original thread how to capture plates at that distance...

@EMPIRETECANDY has mentioned in other threads the stock is low and this is an older camera, so not many people have them available but Amazon should have his shipment this week.

Bad luck, the Z12E and the Z4E are badly lack of stocks now in China, we shipped the last batch stocks to US last week, the Z12E can be there this week, amazon will start the shipping.
The Z4E still have some left on Amazon.

I see that Andy curremtly has the Loryta branded models. Are these the same as the Dahua?

The 5241 has AI in it and the 5231 does not. The 5241 can set a manual focus, which is great for LPR purposes.

Other than that, they are the same. I have one of each and they are both doing LPR.

The chipsets are thus different because of the AI, and personally I think the 5231 results in a better image and easier to dial in. Many folks here have seen differences in settings between the different chipsets of the 5241 model, so the settings are different between older 5241 and newer 5241 cameras.

At the tight zoom we are for LPR, and especially at night, the AI is useless. The camera needs to be able to see and identify the object and it just happens too fast at the zooms we run LPR at.

Andy's cameras are Dahua and Hikvision OEM equipment sold under the names Loryta and Empiretech.

Some of my cameras I have bought from Andy from his Amazon and AliExpress store come as Dahua cams in Dahua boxes with Dahua logos, and some are not logo'd - I think it depends on how many cameras Andy buys if he gets them with the Dahua Logo or not. But regardless, they are Dahua units. If you get a unit that has Dahua on it, then the camera GUI will say Dahua; otherwise it will simply say IP Camera but looks identical except without the logo. Some of his cameras may come with EmpireTech stamped on them as well.

As long you you by from the vendor EmpireTech or Loryta on Amazon (or AliExpress), they are Andy cams and Dahua or Hikvision OEM.

His cameras and NVRs are international models and many of them are not available through Dahua and Hikvision authorized dealers, but his cameras and NVRs are usually better than what you can find from an authorized dealer. You select the country at camera initialization.

You can update the firmware on Andy's cameras and NVRs from the Dahua and Hikvision website, thus proving they are real Dahua and Hikvision. But you will find that the firmware we get from him is actually better and more recent than what is on the Dahua website because many members here provide feedback to Andy and then Dahua makes modifications to the firmware and sends back to him and then he sends out to his customers. These have been great improvements that Dahua doesn't even update their firmware and add to their website. So many of us are running a newer firmware than those that purchase Dahua cameras through professional installers. Smart IR on the 5442 series is one such improvement. Autotracking on the 49225 PTZ is another. We got the next version of AI SMD 3.0 prior to anyone else as well.

Look at the threads here where members are actually testing firmware and improving it for Dahua - find a Dahua dealer with that type of relationship that Andy has with Dahua - I don't think you will find it. Look at the Dahua 4k camera on the 1/1.2" sensor as an example - Dahua provided that to Andy for sale before Dahua even made it available and look at all the improvements being made to the firmware from input from customers right here on this site. And the kicker is, we are not Dahua's target market - it is the professional installers...

You do have to be careful with some rebranded cameras purchased from other vendors as they are cameras that are for the Chinese region but have been hacked into English but then are not able to be updated or they will brick. Buying from a reputable source is key to make sure that doesn't happen.

Thank you. I will order the Z12E from him now. How do I get the most recent firmware for that model from him?

He checks that the camera isn't a dud and DOA and puts the best firmware on it. Keep in mind sometimes the best firmware isn't the most recent one.

For example a recent test that @Wildcat_1 just did on the latest:

1 quick update. I always try the VOLT related FW's on all VOLT cameras to test across the board. In this case this FW does NOT play nice with the 5241's like the Z12. Therefore would NOT recommend installing or testing there if you are inclined. Will continue to test on the 5442's and report back but wanted to make people aware of that. Specific issue includes pulsing or flashing image and then 3DNR appearing (from analysis) to be turned off even though the GUI shows its on, tons of artifacting and noise. Factory resetting a Z12 and downgrading to 09/30 for example showed no issue BUT upgrading back to the latest and the issue returned. Reported back to Dahua

The firmware revisions can be found at this link below. But a common theme here is do not break what isn't broke. So if the camera is working for you and meets your needs, in many instances an update breaks what was working for you and gives you something you don't need.

Here are issues I have seen people report here where they were upgrading just for the sake of upgrading:
  • A Dahua Z12E that someone updated and then constantly reboots comes to mind,
  • The Dahua 49225 PTZ that loses autotracking with an update come to mind,
  • A Hikvision ANPR camera losing half the FPS and loses the ability to read US plates - those are big deals to have happen.
  • A Hikvision camera that the user lost ability to control the LED light function at night.
  • Countless other instances where the camera simply bricked and became useless (they bought from a non-reputable vendor).
  • Countless examples where the camera went into Chinese (they bought from a non-reputable vendor).
Don't do it unless it is fixing a problem you are experiencing or adds a feature you really need.
