With my S3 license plate cameras I run the IR around the 20% level. It is a fine balance to keep from washing out the new plates that have excellent reflectivity, and having enough IR for the dirty plates so that I can get a good reading on them.

My gut feeling says that IR is always going to produce better results. First, not every car is going to have working license plate lights. Even if the street is relatively bright, I think the lack of a license plate light will greatly hamper the ability to capture good plates with ambient...

The ALPR module uses the license-plate model first to find the license plates in the images sent. If the module does not find any license plates it returns nothing found. If it finds a license plate then it crops the plate and runs OCR on the cropped plate and send the OCR results.

IPC-Color4K-T180 has a very narrow and 180 degree view that is good for the overview of the street or side path of home with no IR builtin in the camera. It's definitely not for license plate capture of a moving car.

Just be aware that the IPC-Color4K-T180 has no IR illumination for night time and depends on enough ambient light or its own visible white LED to "see."
