Frustrated, missed out on an event

Yes, triggers and alerts are independent of actual recording. All but one of my cameras records 24/7 and all are set up to alert me based on triggers.

    Fixed vs Vari-Focal Lenses

The bigger issue is direct rain when you have IR on. I posted a sample in the thread for that camera. If you live in a rainy climate AND can't keep it dry AND need the onboard IR, then I wouldn't recommend it. I'm not too concerned about the dome fogging. If it happens in 5-10 years, I'll just...

Advice on low wattage computer (fanless ?)

A newer computer will draw less power. I'd be leery of any fanless PC not having enough CPU power to handle 15 camera. My i5-6500 draws maybe 30w with 9 2MP starlights @ approx 32% CPU utilization with the UI up.

    Fixed vs Vari-Focal Lenses

That's what I did. The varifocal was my first camera and was used to test various locations and focal lengths. I eventually deployed it in a location where I needed a focal length between the 3.6 mm and 6 mm available on the fixed lens models. My final tally ended up being 3 x 2.8mm, 4 x 3.6mm...

How to turn off WAN access ?

That would keep BI from sending notifications since it needs Internet for that. As already stated, the router is what regulates inbound access from the Internet. If no ports are forwarded, then the computer is not visible from the Internet. Removing the gateway from the cameras is fine because...

Source for white outdoor Ethernet cable?

My project design has evolved so much since I posted this, including their placement. I now have 6 cameras deployed. Two are high enough that the Ethernet punches through the exterior wall at the bottom of the attic. Three more have their cables run through 3/4" PVC in the garage to reach the...

What is you KW electricity cost in your region ?

I worked in a grocery store from 1990 to 1996. We were an NCR store but I remember when the office got a cool new PC running OS/2. I think that's when we got an electronic time clock than scanned a bar code on our ID card so the manger didn't have to sit there every week and add up everyone's...

If the problem is mostly at night when the IR is in use, can you disable the IR and rely on a porch light?

    calculating network bandwidth

FWIW, I have 9 1080p Dahua starlights connected to Blue Iris. All are using h.265 and the maximum bitrate allowed by each camera. Most are VBR but a couple are CBR. Windows Task Manager shows the Ethernet bandwidth averaging about 17Mbps, or 1.7% of GigE's capacity.

Cam #3 and #4 are up

In further testing, I decided that 3.6mm was way too wide so I wound up installing my 5231RP-Z test camera there, zoomed to 300. The last two locations have already been tested out so I shouldn't need it again. The 6mm camera will get moved to a more appropriate location. BTW, the PFA130E...

Opinion: Continuous vs. Motion Trigger Recording?

The only camera I have set to record on motion is the one in the garage. It's a 2.8mm lens mounted over the door into the house and the big door is in view so anything visible is going to cause a trigger.

Switch in the attic vs. homerun wiring?

I have the 18 port version. No complaints. I've bought many brands of switches over the year and never seen any come with RJ45 covers.

Switch in the attic vs. homerun wiring?

All cameras home-run to a 12 port patch panel on my office closet wall. Patch cords connect them to an 18 port POE switch which uplinks to my main switch. This closet already contained my networking stuff and NAS before cameras were even a thought. While I don't have AC and it can get very hot...

SD card disappeared from 3 of 6 cameras

This seems to have something to do with the auto reboot function. When I clicked "manual update" under System, Auto Maintain, the SD card came back on each camera. I'm not sure why that would work when power cycling didn't. The next night, one of them hit its weekly auto reboot and the card...

Which firmware adds WDR mode to backlight options dropdown (IPC-HDW5231RP-Z )?

I purchased a IPC-HDW5231RP-Z from Andy about a year ago which has firmware 2.460.0000.15R dated 2017-09-07. I noticed my latest purchase of a IPC-HDW4231EMP-AS fixed starlight has firmware 2.800.000000.0R dated 2018-12-26 which now includes a WDC option under backlight control. This mode seems...

What is you KW electricity cost in your region ?

I believe I'm paying about $0.25/kwh in Southern California and we're not even a heavy user since we lack air conditioning. Its only going to get more expensive too as the People's Republic of California attempts to force its subjects to reverse global warming all by themselves. Unfortunately...

16:9 is horrendous, please stop buying them

Then its called corridor mode. For such applications, I'd rather have a tall/skinny video than a landscape 4:3 which still gives me 1/3-1/2 of a frame of useless walls. These are surveillance videos here, not Hollywood movies.

16:9 is horrendous, please stop buying them

90% of the time, vertical video just winds up with the top half of the frame being useless ceiling or sky. I admit I shot one clip vertical years ago. My friend's kid was rolling a car or something toward me on the floor and its something I would have shot portrait orientation if I were doing...

    Why Buy Dahua?

If its a wide angle lens, that's just the nature of the beast. A $2000 ultra-wide professional DSLR lens will give the same stretched effect to anything too close to the edges of the frame if its keeping straight lines straight (rectilinear). My 2.8mm Dauhas are slightly fisheye so objects near...

good cam for dark garage? (can use IR illuminator)

@EMPIRETECANDY is the go-to guy for Dahua. Higher megapixel cameras will require more light than lower megapixel cameras.

good cam for dark garage? (can use IR illuminator)

For reference, here's a shot from a Dahua 4231 mini-wedge 2.8mm. I suspect a camera with a single bright LED like the turret version would do better.

16:9 is horrendous, please stop buying them

I need to view a covered patio from one corner. I wound up getting a 2.8 mm lens even though it sees a little more of the wall than I'd like, but I needed the vertical coverage. When I angle the camera down slightly, the narrower lenses lose coverage on the upper parts of the doors where a...

    Another NVR vs BI question

I fix PCs and while it can happen from a hard shut down, it is far less of an issue than it was back in the FAT32 days. NTFS does a much better job protecting itself.
