Thief steals security cams on Christmas morning.

I see so many of these and it shows how important placement is but what I always say at each one is - - - too bad they didn't have one at the street to capture License Plates.

    DH-IPC-HDW2231R-ZS Optical zoom ?

Okay then - since that is identical to the 5231 spec sheet - I'll go with it having a 5x optical zoom. Wonder why they didn't just state it - obviously I'm new to the camera scene. Much appreciated fenderman.

    DH-IPC-HDW2231R-ZS Optical zoom ?

heh, yep, I have always assumed it was a zoom lens based on that and the FOV changes - but OPTICAL zoom just isn't stated anywhere that I have found yet. I do appreciate you taking a look too. :)

    DH-IPC-HDW2231R-ZS Optical zoom ?

Looked through the specs, youtube, google reviews and this forum for over an hour with no certainty. Some say that it does have an optical zoom but I can't find the power of that zoom. The specs only show the 16x digital. The 5231 clearly shows a 5x optical zoom and a 16x digital zoom which...

    How-To: Audio Inputs

Thanks for the response @Fastb. I only considered the $ because I haven't bought them yet, thus have my options open. You raised an interesting point on locating the microphone though - hadn't thought of that. Even in checking the reviews on the 5231, I do not remember much commentary on the...

    How-To: Audio Inputs

While trying to figure out which cameras I want/need for a NEW install - Audio became an item to consider and this thread answered most of the questions but I do want to be clear. 1. Between the 5231 and a 2231 turret cameras I could save $50 with the 2231 and then spend about $20 to add what...

    Questions on switches

Going back to my original post and possible layout (which will likely only have 7 cameras) - if I remember right someone had said that a switch running 10/100 to all of the cameras was fine if the uplink was 1 gigabit. Since I have seen a few routers with a single 1 gigabit uplink and 8 ports at...

    Laptop curious

Just wondering if anyone has run their system with a laptop and BI ? Let's assume the laptop was always plugged in and had an i5 6th gen chip with an SSD, an external Terabyte+ drive to store the vids and a switch. Doubt I would do this, but just curious.

    Questions on switches

I am also finding that many of the switches advertised also only have POE on half of the ports. Have to be careful and seems to be deceptive advertising to me .

    Questions on switches

I was checking out some threads on server type switches and the power consumption and noise started to turn me against those. The information provided here on adding switches as needed kind of sealed that deal too. Using a 2nd NIC makes the most sense now also if I decide that I want to connect...

    Questions on switches

It is my understanding now that your standard POE will run up to 15 watt devices per port and anything needing more watts needs POE+ which can run 30-45 watt devices per port. Since only the PTZ needs 20 watts and most other devices only need 8.5 max., I could use a regular POE switch and...

    Questions on switches

my original plan was for 8 cameras and then I got the PTZ which might eliminate a few but now I am considering adding some inside the house - so I am trying to get my thoughts correct on expansion possibilities. Thanks for that other thread too.

    Questions on switches

I'll attach my diagram and thoughts: The items in green are what I already own and the stuff on the left is my current working setup. I am slowly buying cameras but do already own the 20watt PTZ too. (never used) From what I have been reading for days now, it seems that the network on the right...

PTZ on Sale for another hour - thoughts

at that price it's not much more than a 5231 and I could always move it to the back yard later. Still trying to find the down side of grabbing one of these.

PTZ on Sale for another hour - thoughts

Saw this on Andy's sight - on sale for another hour and although its an Amcrest - I've always wanted a PTZ. Seems like a heck of a deal for under $200. Thoughts ?

Hide street scene camera in a birdhouse, fake rock, or...?

If you have your mailbox near that street, there are lots of ways to dress those up. For ideas, I like to go to Pinterest or even a home improvement website of your choice and input the search word Mailbox and get ideas. Maybe even just "yard decorations" if mailbox isn't an option. My box is...

    Bicycle Thief

looked to me like he also knew you had cameras. probably saw them in the daytime - maybe you could check out some previous footage over the last few days and look for a similar character. something about that body language.

    Lit up neighbors

How it looks in that photo is exactly how it feels when I stand in my front yard but of coarse you are seeing a lot of lens flare. The phone settled on its own exposure after taking one with the flash on. ( I'll attach that) I'll be checking to see what Starlight does, but likely this will be...

    Lit up neighbors

:) LOL - I do use Post-it notes to test things like that - but as bp2008 stated - I think the lens flare will still exist. I took the photo from the height that I intend to use and only moved to the center of the driveway to get a direct shot of their light. Right now there are a few tiny...

    Lit up neighbors

@bp2008 thanks for that bit of info on the overlay, etc. When I get the computer and cameras set up - I'll tinker with them, visit with the neighbor and come back to update the thread. Thanks all.

    Lit up neighbors

Actually I held my camera right up where I anticipated installing it as I wanted it as low as possible for better face detection. I can mount it up on the soffit which will be about 16 inches higher and point it lower if I must, but was hoping for other options. :( I figure if I can block out...

    Lit up neighbors

We've been neighbors for 22 years and I do like these folks. Just hoping that the cameras I put out here could deal with it on my end first. If not, then I'll install the camera and show him what's going on and see what we can adjust. I'll have to ask him what he is really trying to accomplish...

Okay, what's the best way to block this. Most likely this location will get a 2231 camera.

    Lit up neighbors

okay, haven't bought the cameras yet as I am trying to follow some advice and look for possible problems ahead of time. The door cam will likely be the 5231 for the audio and the driveway cam is likely to be a 2231 but I am not sure if I will ever need to use the zoom on those so still looking.

    Lit up neighbors

yes, he has it mounted on a flat surface facing almost straight at me. I'll try to get a shot after dark tonight. Since I will be placing another cam near my front door, it will be picked up on that one also. A blocking technique will likely need to be used.

    Lit up neighbors

I plan to put a cam that covers my driveway but I also have a neighbor right across the street that thinks he has to run his 2 billion watt driveway light from dusk till dawn. They won't change it ( I've asked before when I wanted to step out front to watch satellites overhead ). I am pretty...
