I have to laugh when I see a story about opossums. About 20 years ago, I was trying to kill a stump, so I had a brilliant idea. I would pour salt and bacon grease on the stump hoping it would kill it so I could manage the stump when it dried up. To my surprise one night there were a few opossums...- vandyman

Water Pump - Rain barrel solution
I would look into a good sump pump. Most have an 1-1/2" outlet that can be reduced to a garden hose. Also they have a float shut off. -
