    Well days later and the CMOS seems to have died (confirmed by testing it with another ip cam), so it seems the purple shadows were a symptom of a sensor on its way out (or I was doing something that was slowly killing it).

    No. Based on the discussion here I'm skipping any camera doorbell for now and will instead implement a solution that works on the current bell and chime's circuit level (using sensors etc).

    I've read through this and the LTS thread but am still left wondering if the DB-120A-IW is worth the entry fee. It can be had for around £80/$107 here in the UK which might be cheap enough to compensate for the complaints? Is anyone actually happy with theirs?
