NVR plugged direct into modem... concerns

Thank you for this, that’s the sort of info I have been looking for. I want to call the installer out, but I don’t like doing that unless I have actual information. If you have any links to hikvision, that would be helpful. I specifically asked if I should set up a VPN and they said it’s not...

NVR plugged direct into modem... concerns

Oh, hikvision isn’t secure? I mean, obviously any cloud basted service has potential issues. But is hikvision known to not be secure? This is literally all new to me, my other setups are DVR’s which I access via r-pi VPN. I asked the installer if I should use a VPN, he said no need.... this is...

NVR plugged direct into modem... concerns

I agree, there is 0 way to know. I’m just trying to get a sense of the likelihood. If I am told there is relatively 0 known exploits, that would have been one thing. Knowing they are known to have exploits, that’s another. One of my friends let me know they are known to being hacked into routers...

NVR plugged direct into modem... concerns

I am sure I can get it to work one way or another. But again, trying to understand any possible exploits that could have been, well, exploited. Does anyone know of a way to modify the OS of these boxes, and could that be done via some random default service/admin password on a totally wide open...

NVR plugged direct into modem... concerns

What is that? All I currently know is it’s a CommP 8 Port NVR. Also, what’s HikConnect? Sorry, I have not been hands on since I can’t even log into it when I have physical access, the user account they created me has no rights to any settings... Really just trying to determine if there are...

NVR plugged direct into modem... concerns

Any info on this? It’s a Hikvision CommP NVR. Anyone know what version of Linux these things are based off of? What hardening goes into them? Is there re-writable flash on the boards that could have been compromised? Supposedly the installer was able to view the camera feed from LTE on his...

NVR plugged direct into modem... concerns

I should have specified, HDMI to monitor. I don't have SADP, that may be useful.

NVR plugged direct into modem... concerns

I would tend to agree, but after talking to them they did confirm it was working when they left. I am new to these NVR's, I am typically used to needed to open router ports (or set up a VPN which is what I typically do) to be able to view the cams when not on the LAN, but I guess this system...

NVR plugged direct into modem... concerns

Let me preface this with I didn't do this. I didn't have my router set up yet in my new house, and the "security folks" I hired to help get the cameras set up and wired in clearly are not super bright which I previously did not know. They plugged the new NVR they provided me directly into my...

I don't see the PTZ on the cliff-notes sheet. What is the model number?

    Dahua 2MP Starlight Varifocal Bullet

These are some phone pix of the cameras I want to replace. They are currently on a DVR, and I would like to transition to Blue Iris and a good night vision Dahua camera. As you can see, not super high quality. Hopefully a Dahua option would allow for a cleaner image. I believe these are 720p...

    Dahua 2MP Starlight Varifocal Bullet

I am looking at picking up a Dahua 2MP Starlight Varifocal Bullet: IPC-HFW5231E-Z5E Intended use: it will be on top of my 3 story house and I want to use this location to see over my neighbors roofs (2 story) and down the street a bit. Camera will be ~40-50 feet away from the street...

    Camera options - opinions waned

Thanks for the suggestion @mat200. I will definitely look into those.

If that is the top dog, that is fine. I don't want to spend money to spend money, but that is just there as a max budget. If there is a difference in quality for a nice expensive piece of hardware, I am open to it. But if the ~150-200 dollar camera is the one to get, so be it.

Ok, slight change of scope. What if I wanted commercial grade cameras. I am thinking 2-3 very high quality cameras that will perform very well at night. Lets say I want to spend less than 2 grand on the 3 cameras. What would I be looking for? I really want high quality...

Any suggestions? Standard 2MP 1080p with good IR? I do have a camera thread going with no input so far. Camera options - opinions waned

I have and am, but that only goes so far. This particular thread is trying to inquire about PC hardware needs, only real question is CPU, everything else is pretty well handled from the PC hardware front. Wiki suggests the i5 I have should suffice, but I am looking for some user feedback. SSD...

O shoot. Got my terminology wrong, I am planning 2k, which is 4MP... CPU still enough for that?

    Computer for BI

Thus a 120 GB should be plenty sufficient? All this PC will do is run blue iris, and I suppose I’ll have to work out a VPN solution which will have the be either on a pi or on this machine. But a VPN client takes 0 space... Thanks!

    Camera options - opinions waned

I have skimmed through the wiki and cliff notes, but before I really sit down and digest it, I just wanted a few pointers or things to look for in my situation. I am setting up a blue iris system with a computer I have laying around, the specs should be sufficient for my needs. It’s an i5 4430...

@bp2008 is the CPU to slow for a 4-5 2mp camera setup in your opinion? From what I have read I think it should suffice, but I am not certain. I can always test it out and see how it does, I have the computer just sitting here. Also, what exactly does the limit decode feature do?

    Computer for BI

Yes, that is where I got the assumption that the i5 will suffice, and looking at the "Performance Data" page looks to support this. I am just double checking since I am new to this. And I am still somewhat unsure why an SSD is required. Is the main CPU hit transcoding the video for storage? Is...

I have an old machine that needs a new day job... and it happens to line up pretty well with the system reqs I came across. i5 4430, 8 GB RAM, and it does have a 120GB Evo 840 in it, but I am not 100% sure if that is required. I did read that "clips" should be stored on there in the hardware...
