Comparing the Vari-Focals Specs of the IPC-Color4M-TZ-Pro versus the 5442 (both 4MP), the "Min Illumination" numbers only changed from 0.0007@F/1.8 to 0.0006@F1/1.2 ... so kinda suggests not much improvement in sensor technology(?)
A couple of other things I noticed (but I defer to people like @steve1225 who are 100X smarter) is much closer focusing distance, very similar FOV, same 4GB of ROM, but 2GB versus 1GB RAM (presumably for more processing), IR+Warm lights versus just IR, bunch of AI improvements, no 50/60FPS@1920x1080 (loss?), DUAL microphone versus one(?), Ethernet is still just 10/100 ... no upgrade to 10/100/1000, higher power draw, especially when all the bells & whistles are turned on, little bigger & heavier (maybe due to new lens).
BTW, it would be awesome if they published the maximum F-Stop for various focal lengths - i.e. how quickly does the lens "close up" as you zoom in. Really helpful for low-light situation ... since you may be better off giving up the flexibility of the vari-focal if the largest aperture at the same zoomed-in FOV as the 3.6mm lens on the F/1.0 fixed-focal is much smaller.
Interesting that on the IPC-Color4M-T-Pro, there is only 2.8/3.6mm lens offerings - I've read how focus was challenging with the 6mm lens.
So Steve,no, basic sensor technology is similar..
main difference is ISP - image signal processor - which reconstruct color image based on RAW data from the sensor.
TIOC-PRO was a first cam where Dahua did huge step here - using modern technology from mobile / sport / drone cams world..
classic 2D & 3D noise reduction algorithms were replaced by AI network (very costly thing).
Also modern full scene HDR, full scene LUT coloring and modern sharpening algorithms were implemented.
I hope next Dahua cams (like WizColor 5459-PRO) will do here even more.
I play with modern sport cams & drones, I know what performance have those cams using 1/1.3" 48Mpx sensors (11x more pixels that we have in 5442) using latest high performance AI based ISP video processing chips...
those specs sheet says nothing about SOC with all internal parts (CPU, GPU, ISP, AI accelerators, used algorithms) and their performance.
HiSilicon (main supplier of CCTV SOCs for both HIK & Dahua) stopped publishing spec sheets and documentations for new chips many years ago (they are on the US black list from many years)...
HiSilicon is also main manufacturer of chips for Chinese mobile phones and sport/drone cams - so they have big progres here (big market with billions invested).
And they simply copy / scale down mobile technology to CCTV chips with some a few years delay using cheaper production processes.
Cams don't require more bandwidth than 100 mbit/s and full gigabit ethernet require almost 1W more of POE power.
New cam can drain more power due more technology (especially AI video processing which is very energy hungry).
New cam can be heavier due more open (F1.2) varifocal optics which will be bigger/heavier, built-in speaker (which must be bigger for siren) and more LEDs..
they never spec this for fixed cams..
sometimes in PTZ cams you can find min aperture for max zoom.
5x42 / WizColor-S cams were last one cams on market with fixed 6mm lenses.. I don't know anyone who produce cams with lenses like this (HIK do only 2.8 and 4.0mm)..
this is a little part of history - original 5x42 didn't have varifocal option for turret chassis - the lenses were to big to fit them.
So Dahua created fixed 6.0mm to give some flexibility when installing turret cams...
After one or two years of 5442 on the market they created new varifocal lens which fitted turrets cams but never canceled fixed 6.0mm variant..
