Hello..

I've been installing a variety of HIKVision cameras at home, but curious about sub-stream performance on some. For some reason my 4MP cams like the DS-2CD2042WD-I (v5.3.8) seem to have a max sub-stream frame rate of 15fps where other cheap cams like my 3MP DS-2CD2432F-IW (v5.3.0) can do 30fps. Just seems like an odd limitation but I guess that's just the case?

When I ssh to the DS-2CD2042WD-I cams they seem to have plenty of cpu left (running at like 12% with my 1080p main stream), although maybe the stream processing is done with other encoding chips I guess.

Anyway, just curious if anyone has any insight here. I'd like to run all my sub-steams at 30fps for a nice smooth multi-view display, but it's looking that that will be impossible with what I have currently.

Thanks...

You can set it to 20fps on the DS-2CD2042WD-I

They should run 3MP @ 30fps, but why? 20fps is plenty. 15fps is a sweet-spot if you need lots of storage and 25fps is real-time.

Well I'm talking about the sub-stream here (used for live multi-views), not main-stream (which I'm recording). Sub stream frame rate options on the DS-2CD2042WD-I seem to max out at 15fps for me:

Sorry, mis-read that. Let me check mine. I know the 3MP cameras are better for substream.

I have the same question. IMO the DS-2CD2042WD-I is crap compared to the older DS-2CD2032-I. I am much happier with the 2032. I think the image is cleaner both day and night with the 2032. My firmware:

I attached how I rip both my cameras and both sets of streams. The top two windows are the 2032 and the bottom two are the 2042.

What resolution does the 2042 support on the sub stream?

the 2032 does 704*576 @ 25FPS max
