5231rze - reducing motion blur at night

Had the above camera for around a year, bought from Andy, really happy with the picture in general, it covers my driveway which is lit by a 30w led security light through the night.
Due to the led light I run it in colour mode at night.
What settings should I be looking at to reduce motion blur at night. If someone is stood still then I.d is fine but a walking subject is blurry?

These images are stills taken from video at midnight (led security light on)

This is similar time of night but car actually stopped right outside so image is much better.

You have some parameters to mess around with, I'd suggest increasing shutter to 1/1000 or higher. It's trial and error, with some luck and sweat, because each and every environment is different (eg ambient light, speed of the cars, reflections etc). Once I had my 5231, they gave me splendid night vision footage, but (only) license plates were blurry. Messed around with settings (for your record, these are mine now:
Shutter manual 1/2000
Gain 10-40
Iris 40
HLC 65
3dnr 45
Smart IR on

License plates at night are nice and crispy, but I can't see anything else anymore (but that area is covered by a second cam anyhow).

Thank you, that gives me a starting point, il be honest, I just got them up and running and that’s where I left it.
Considering adding another to set up just for plates.
I have a pair of 4mp non starlight dahuas to cover the wider area and back garden but as I have the starlight trained on the driveway entrance it would be good to get good blur free images if possible.

You may find as many do that color at night without blur is tough. It takes a lot of white light.

I can attest to this as well. The shutter speed will help. You should adjust it to be twice what the FPS is, i.e. 1/30 if FPS is set to 15 FPS. This is what my cameras are set to, I run color mode 24/7 too. You may have to change the shutter speed in order to eliminate blur from moving vehicles. My cameras facing the road tend to have vehicles traveling slower. Also, adding additional white light should help as well.

Great help, I’ve set shutter to manual 1/30 as my FPS are 15 and that has improved it a lot.
I have a streetlight right outside the entrance plus a 30w led floodlight which is on all night.
Running it at 1/30, is that ok for daytime as well ?

These are snapshots of the two cameras that cover the drive, its pretty well lit i think ? These were just taken so exposure at 1/30

Need to test motion and post a clip. Its easy to get a bright crisp snapshot at night, a bit harder to get low motion blur and graininess...

I can’t run mine at 1/30 during the day; the image is too bright. I have two different profiles set up, one for night and one for day.

Honestly I think I may go back to the older 1/30th HLC settings I think that has the crispest image/least blur

No where near the standard of big red fish’s, moving cars are still a bit blurry but the person walking by is lots better, before on auto settings they used to have ghost trails behind them.

Pmcross , when you set your profiles up, I assume this is done through the actual camera software ?

I set up the day and night profiles from the camera web GUI. I have Blue Iris triggering the profile change at dusk/dawn. My cameras are Amcrest/Dahua, which can be triggered by URL. There is also a utility that exists to change the profile at dusk/dawn for Dahua cameras.

Thanks, I’ve gone into the cameras gui and set the profiles up in there and also the day/night switch time. Although my cameras record to blue iris it looked simpler to set the profile switching times in the actual camera GUI

Definite improvement!

I truly believe the street light makes all the difference. Notice on mine the camera sits on a pole about 25ft back from the road, in a darker area, looking into the bright streetlight. You're scene is more typical (opposite) and challenging with the camera in a light area looking into a darker area.
