About to pull the trigger on Server 2019

Hello everyone, It's time for me to get a proper server OS on my home server, and according to THIS THREAD @dmcIPCAM has stated:

... FWIW, I run Blue Iris on Server 2019 and have encountered no problems.

To me this sounds like a shining endorsement, but I just wanted to be sure that I'm doing everything that I can to give BI the best chance of running great right out of the box, so I figured I'd post here for others to tell their Server '19 warnings &/or disaster stories (if there are any), just to avoid any potential pitfalls. Thanks in advance, Cotton

A Server version of Windows will work fine. However unless the server edition offers a specific feature you want and can't get on Home or Pro, then it is not worth the markup. The Server editions are not inherently more stable or anything like that. For the most part they just come with extra Microsoft software on them like domain controller, DNS server, and DHCP server stuff.

Server versions come with greatly reduced nagging. And you're able to update at your convenience and not Microsoft. Having said this I'd go with Server 2022 rather than 2019. 2019 is a bit glitchy in my experience.

I've considered running '22, but I've been reading that it's had problems with Docker, which (funny enough) I don't know what it is, but if I do need it, I don't want it to give me any problems. That, & I'm running this on an antique Dell machine that I'm squeezing ever last dollar from by making it run cameras, and host videos & gaming servers. Is there anything specifically that you can think of that makes '19 glitchy? Thanks for your input, Cotton

I can only speak of my experience. I ran into issues installing it, nothing serious, just annoying. Ran into issues loading drivers, as usual, some were missing from Supermicro's download page. Click on download and you end up at SM's main page. There were a few other issues but it's been awhile so I don't remember the specifics. None of them were serious. I usually go with 2022, it's more polished and problem free. I ended up with 2019 due to a stupid mistake on my part.

BI also runs flawlessly on 2012 R2 if you have that option. I ran BI for years on server grade HW and 2012 R2 and never had a problem.

Right now I'm in the process of building a new server for BI that will consume far less power. I'm using a Shuttle DH370 with an i7 8700 and 64GB of ram. Boot drive is a WD NVMe 1TB and the storage drive is a 1.92TB enterprise SATA SSD, Micron I think. Come the summer I may have to add some additional cooling but I can handle that. The DH370 is awesome.

Many of us turn off Windows updates and get zero nagging and we update at our convenience, if at all.
