Adding to HDW2231R-ZS 2MP cams, go 4MP or stick with 2MP?

I need two more camera, both of these will be in my back yard just to cover deadspots. I plan on just moving two of my existing HDW2231R-ZS cameras there, and then "upgrading" two of the front cameras that face the street

Is the general advice to stick with 2MP, or should I go higher? Low light performance is a must, but if I had a bit more detail of cars parked on the street I wouldn't complain. Its worth noting I don't use IR, I have them color 24/7 and have the shutter speed way down to get more light

double them up. two on each side instead of one. one aimed closer in to cover the yard and everything this side of the sidewalk, the other further out to get action on the sidewalk and street in either direction. the ones for sidewalk/street action can be mounted a bit higher. the 4mp with big (1/1.8") sensors available today are as good as any of the 2MP ever were in low light, unless you're spending big bux for specialty units... btw, for about $20 a pop, you could fairly readily put 6-22mm lenses (vs stock 2.7-13mm or whatever) into your 2231z's to get out to the street. narrower angle will of course always gather less light...

aha, we will have new year discount from Feb.1st-3rd.Feb, grab some 4mp. lol
2mp also good if budget is limited.

Have you done walking tests at night to see what the motion blur is like currently when you go to pause the video? What shutter speed are you using when you say "way down"?

My vote is for the 5442. I have three of them on my house. Two stay in color 24x7 while the other (in my backyard) goes to IR since there is no light back there at all.

Ideally, go with the 5442-Z and play with the focal length to get the detail and width you want, love spending someone else's money. You can also look at the 3241T-ZAS which is a 2MP varifocal. I have a couple and they are pretty good, actually better than the 5231 and are less expensive than the 5442-Z series.

Thanks guys, I'm going to go all in with them. I'll probably get 2 for the front

Do you know if the base mount for the HDW2231R-ZS is the same as these? I'm hoping to just loosen the torx screw and remove the camera and throw in the new one without unscrewing

I know the base uses the same screw pattern. I replaced a HDW5231R-ZE with a HDW5442T-ZE pretty easily. I think I may have used the new "shroud" but kept the old base. Not sure if you could do the same with a 2231.
