Hi,
I have been reading the manual, but I am not 100% sure of this...
Am I correct by thinking in order for this section to be implemented,

the AI in Motion Trigger Sources needs to be ticked?

If not, what is that AI option for?
If yes, what happens if AI is not ticked there. Is there a default min confidence or pre triggers?

Thank you.

It's not needed.

For its purpose, see this thread.

On Alert Notification - ONVIF vs AI
I read that other post, but I'm still confused as to what is the AI for. My confusion is, even if I untick the AI as an option, I still get motion alert notifications.
Maybe I am over thinking it. The manual doesn't really get into much detail explaining the difference.

Could you explain in layman's terms, when would I need to tick the AI option.. meaning to achieve what exactly?

I'm not using this feature, but this is my understanding:
  • If you are using 'Continuous AI as source', it must be checked.
  • If you are not using 'Continuous AI as source', it doesn't matter whether it's checked or not.
Also, for the why use this question, I meant to point you to this thread.
