Alerting when there is no motion possible?

Hi All,

A bit of a strange question but let me explain why.

Need to monitor my staff so that if they stop moving\working I get an alert ...... Just kidding

Just getting started with 3D printing and had a spare camera available that i'm going to run through my existing BI setup so the printing can be monitored remotely while at work etc and also some time lapse captures.
Would be great if BI could send an alert should the print motion stop using the usual push notifications so that I can then shut down the power socket remotely in the event that something is stuck and reduce the likelihood of a fire occurring from such a scenario.
Wasn't sure if there was a way to get BI to notify on lack of movement, thought probably not but then worth just asking the question in case i'm just missing something that would allow this.

Had a good read through, it seems not to be possible without additional hardware which was my initial feeling before posting but thought maybe someone knew better than me. I'm not that desperate to get the stopped print alerting it would just have been handy if possible using the built in options.

Bi can detect movement and perform all kinds of notifications and alerts but it would be tricky motion detection configuration to interpret when something STOPS moving and to prevent many false alerts.

Certainly, I'm no BI expert and do think it's possible but with a little external hardware, like a USB to digital I/O board that would interface to the PC. You have a 3D printer, not a $40 Wal-mart inkjet and since you implied that you're running a company (you want to "....monitor my staff") you should be able to write the purchase off anyway.

Does the printer have an alarm LED on it's front panel or make any other kind of notification, audible or visual, when it has an error?

Am I correct in understanding that you only want to be notified if the printer stops because it has an fault/malfunction that causes it to stop printing?

Hiya,

The staff comment was only a joke, just a future 3d hobbyist with a normal IT day job.

Yes it was just if it stopped but the heaters were stuck on (although unlikely) to avoid a fire scenario, will prob just get a wifi based fire alarm installed by the printer that can send alerts directly to cover that off.

Don't think it has any alarm LED as such on the printer just shows the error in text on the LCD. I'm not massively worried, will still be using for monitoring remotely visually and also so I don't end up with a room full of spaghetti mess will be able to use motion alerting if stuff starts to move outside the normal printing boundary should a print become dislodged from the bed.

You might look into PaperCut NG; the NG version is free for up to 5 users.

It can monitor for printer errors and send notifications; if you e-mail to your mobile via text/SMS you can likely get it within 5 seconds (my AT&T cell does from my Blue Iris to my 10digitcell@txt.att.net, surely other carriers have similar).

And that is no joke.
