We repaired tv's in electronics class in HS. Every so often we would rig capacitors to the power cord of a tv, then mix the plug-end near a tv someone was working on. They would go to plug in their TV, and BOOM! LOL.... We had one shoot straight up and bust an 8 foot fluorescent light bulb, with glass shards raining down on everyone at that workbench. The screaming of that teacher kind of ended the fun.... kind ofHah! Electronics trade school in the USCG ages ago... We'd charge up caps about as big as your hand and leave them laying in the hallway for newbies to find and pick up. You didn't need to mishandle them more than once to learn respect for them.![]()
Ah....CRT TV's.......My dad was an extremely religious man and would never say a swear word, even remotely close to a swear word.........until the one day he was working in the back of the color console TV in the living room and got bit by the high voltage transformer for the CRT. He let out a loud " Ow! You mother fucker", Mom was in the living room and heard it, starting giving Dad hell for swearing in front of the kids. Dad was pissed off because he just got the holy hell knocked out of himself and mom was just worried about the mother fucker thing. They got into a big fight and ended up not talking to each other for about a week. Good times and fond childhood memories.........We repaired tv's in electronics class in HS. Every microwave oven has that kind of potential too...Way back when I saw a 100,000@250VDC literally explode inside an equipment cabinet. That cabinet had 14ga steel walls. The wall the capacitor was mounted to was blown out and sprayed shrapnel for about 20 feet. They can get nasty if they're wired up with reverse polarity and the power supply has a high current capability.
