Are junctions boxes really needed for a HDW 4431C ?

Why can't I just attach it directly to the surface?

I wouldn't use one unless absolutely necessary.

I am guessing that you don't have one in your hands yet? If my hunch is correct, could you tell us what you are proposing to mount it to and if you can drill hole directly through the surface and access from other side?

EDIT: above questions because cheaper to buy with camera than separate purchase.

I plan to mount it on an aluminum soffit / fascia. I plan to run the wire through the attic and come out directly when I mount the cameras. No, I do not have them yet. Thank you

A junction box is mainly for wires, to keep connections dry/safe.
If your location is solid enough to handle the weight of the camera, mount it there.
