Computer is a

I didn't have the screen connected so I'm not sure if it was a cpu usage issue or not. I'm using direct to disk recording at the highest possible settings.

Do you have an SD card in the camera? I was having same issues and reformatted and it went away. For good measure I then also turned off substream and anything else not needed.

post a clip of the skipping...noise reduction can have this type of affect on the audio. Try disabling it in the camera.

Did you disable the noise reduction in audio settings of the cam as @fenderman suggested?
If so, then I'd suggest it is a network problem.
Bad switch.
Bad cabling.
Bad crimps on the cable
Used CCA instead of Solid Copper Cable.
Didn't use the 568B standard when crimping connections.
