I plan on using Hikvision 2CD2032-I cameras. The spec says it uses a 4mm lens. Since I'm not sure, is that a wide-angle lens? Should I use my iPhone camera as a guide to find camera locations etc? If I have a DSLR would that help me in determining locations? Thanks!

4mm is the second widest lens. This might help. A while ago I snapshotted my camera grid and marked all the models and lens sizes. It should help you get a feel for the field of view you can expect.

I think that's around 70 degrees, maybe a smidge higher. When I was trying to figure out which cams to get (2.8 is about 90 degrees) I stood in various spots where they were and held my arms at 90 or 70 degree angles so I could get a rough estimation of what it would be able to see.

Actually, I think I even got more serious. I found out what the field of view is on my iphone, took pics where the cameras would be, and then cropped out images from the iphone image so that I could see very precisely what the camera of various lens sizes would see.

I have two 2.8 on my exterior and one 4mm. I wish one of the 2.8 was a 4 but it was stupidly cheap at the time on ebay and I snatched it up. I think in general 4 is best for a driveway.

Thanks for the replies... so how does an iPhone 6 plus camera relate to the 4mm lens on the Hikvision 2CD2032-I? Close enough to do a survey?

According to this utterly ridiculous article, way over the top, it's 64 degrees. So the 2.8 would be almost 1.5 X wider, and the 4mm only a tiny bit wider:

Height calculations won't scale the same way because of the resolution of these cameras. The 2 MP setting is 1920*1080p, but the 3 MP is 2048X1536. The 2 MP setting will give less height in view and more width, but I prefer the 3 MP and I think the above numbers are for the 3 MP resolution.

@bp2008 and @LittleBrother... Very helpful info. Sounds like I can use my iPhone 6 to establish the right position for the cameras before running my wires.
