Anybody have a recommend? I was using a Chinese DVR DT-SL3108HV with software V2.62.R07 I got off ebay. I cant get it to recognize hard-drives anymore. I think its a power issue. I paid $50 for it 3 years ago so I feel like I got my money's worth out of it. It would also be nice to upgrade to HDMI. Thanks in advance. If you could even just tell me what software to look for I think I can do the rest.

If you have analog cameras (your old unit was analog) then you need a DVR, not the NVR.

However, this might be a good time to upgrade to high resolution cameras..

Fenderman is correct. I mistakenly linked to the NVR. Their 8 channel DVR is a bit more money but it's a rebranded Dahua if you look closely. You might be able to find the same thing for less but no support or warranty.

Any other recommends? That one is nice but it does not have the HDMI. Also, I'm having a hard time determining what software is the best. I enjoy reading the manual so I typically don't need tech support.

You cannot load your own software onto a dvr...what you refer to as "software" is the firmware..that comes from the manufacturer...
why do you need hdmi? most tv/monitors have vga...the resolution on the analog dvr's is so low it wont help..if you are looking for better picture you will need to replace your cameras with hd cameras.

I have a Marantz SR 6006 that I use for sending video/audio to 3 TV's in the house. If I bought a DVR with HDMI then I would be able to put it as one of the inputs and send the signal around the house without using a VGA or RCA cable. I already have those cables run but I like the idea of the HDMI option better. Also, in reguards to the software/firmware debate. I have a feeling that you understood what I meant. Before you suggest a complete overhaul of my system realize that my analog cameras have always worked fine for me and in fact have resulted in a conviction for felony theft of property over $500 (they tried to steal my car one night). So now that that is all cleared up. These form's are a good place to find inside info from people that know alot more about a particular field than the average tinker. I would like to know... based on someone's informed opinion... is there a 8 channel DVR out there with firmware from the manufacture that is high quality with HDMI that is under $100?

could you give me some examples of what is out there if money was no concern? I am willing to spend some money on this. Its just that china has the market so saturated with DVR's that are cheap I don't know where to begin.

Go to the dahua and hikvision websites and look through the DVR's..
Another great option is this tribrid

It will work with your cameras as well as HDcvi cameras and ip cameras (limit if 720p on the HD/ip)

I have a stack of dvrs that are doing nothing. All are rebranded dahua , I believe all are 16 channels and all have hdmi. I have a empire security dvr that does both analog and digital, it was a good one but I want to switch to a hikvision nvr. If your interested pm me. Otherwise get ahold.of nellys or milkisbad and upgrade to.IP. you won't look back
