Do you have a favorite budget cam that can read plates at 40 feet?

Need suggestions for the following...

1. If daylight only was important for license plate read at 40 feet?

2. If daylight/nighttime both had to read plate clearly at 40 feet?

 ,
Thanks in advance for your opinions.
You guys are super cool.

The Old Hikvision 2032 with the 12mm lens was a favourite for that role.

The newer 16mm exir bullets would be even better at around $100

6mm lens is a bit short to recommend at 40' but I can read plates at 40' coming in my driveway with a variety of cams. 12mm or a bit better would be preferable. Just about any IP cam that you can manually set the exposure to 1/500 to maybe 1/2000th of a second should work fine to manually read the plates. You'll make your life easier to pick one with the right lens rather than having to take the cam apart and replace the stock wideangle lens with an aftermarket 12mm M12 lens. That doesn't always go well. Googling 16mm EXIR Hikvision will bring up the cams SyconsciousAu is talking about. You may have to do some digging to find one at $100.

Sorry guys, take a look at this camera shot. I want a nice wide angle shot of alley - even a little wider than this is great.

But still be able to read license plate when digital zoom in later if need to. I think 6-12mm lenses is too close up and will be right on license plate.

Wide-angle and licence plate recognition are oxymorons.

Right on the licence plate is exactly what you need if you want to... get a licence plate shot, especially at night.

Two cameras is the solution.

You need two cams if you want both plates at night AND faces. Everything else except the plate will be black. Daytime the cam will be fine for faces and plates locked at 1/500 even on cloudy days. The FOV will be a bit limited though.
