Hey folks,
is anyone using BI on AMD cpu based machine?
I have a buddy looking to repurpose an old desktop and I suggested to save it for possible BI use as he's been thinking about security cams.

In reading plentiful threads here on the SFF 3rd or 4th gen intel based i5 machines to be ideal, but haven't come across any info on BI running on AMD desktop.

any feedback on this will be helpful.
thanks, and have a great, long weekend.

That's because the Intel platform has long been both a mainstream option but also better on power consumption vs performance (especially so if you leverage built-in QuickSync support on Intel that BI has).

Rumors are that AMD might finally pull ahead in this category with 7nm soon, but I'm guessing it would take generations of AMD leading for BI Development Team (of 1 guy in his basement as I recall) would see value in supporting AMD's hardware acceleration option.

Meanwhile truckloads of 4th-9th generation Intel will continue to flood the market for cheap. Will take awhile for it to make sense to try and optimize for the AMD platform, regardless if they get their performance-per-watt below Intel.

If your buddy just wants to Tinker with BI it will work, probably work fine, just for long-term use paying for every kilowatt means finding the most efficient solution (and turns out cheap as well because the recommendation is to buy cheap used).

I use a AMD processor. I do not use hardware acceleration, it work for me, the CPU usage is higher.
