Diagram with lines in black shows my current setup.

Wondering if I should wire my BI PC directly to the managed switch that the cameras are on, as opposed to directly to the router that I currently have it wired to. I added that with the red line.

Just wondering if it would make a difference. Its a managed switch but i'm not familiar with networking stuff so i'm wondering if the router I have goes down or reboots and i have the BI PC linked directly to the switch with the cameras, will it keep recording or would the router going down take everything offline?

That's what I thought, thanks.

Just wondering, will it take any workload off of the router, or does the router still have to handle the data transfer?

No data will pass through the router if you do it this way...

@fenderman is correct. The vast majority of traffic being sent and received by the BI PC is between it and the cameras, as a Windows PC if unmodified it will still chat to the MS master servers from time to time for Windows Updates plus any web browsing you might do on it. Think of network traffic in terms of end points between connections, in this case the BI PC at one end and the cameras at the other. Then think of it in terms of a daily commute to work and back, you would want to live as close to work as possible to make the commute as little as possible. Keeping the PC connected to the router is forcing the bulk of the traffic to pass over the router to the switch and back making this a longer commute to work than is required. Connecting the BI PC to the switch is like moving into a house walking distance from work, this would be the shortest commute possible ergo the most desirable and optimal. The BI PC can still reach the Internet from the switch for the minor traffic, if any, that it sends to something other than the cameras.
