Hoping this is the correct place and you can overlook my nonexistent CAD skills!

I have, somewhat randomly, assumed 90 degree field of view.

Anyway, attached is a rough drawing of my house & yard, I have drawn in what I think I need for camera placement but am very open to suggestions. I know there is a huge blind spot in the SE corner, but am not concerned about that area at this time.

On the front of the house (the side with the driveway) I think I would like to use turrets, mostly for aesthetics, I'm fine with bullets on the back. Everywhere except the South is pretty well lit at night.

Not looking for license plates, just WTH is the dog barking at kinda stuff. FWIW the install will be Optiplex running BI.

Thoughts?

Is there a camera 7 near # 4 at the end of the 22ft line? Finding that IR attracts bugs, which might set off some IVS. Might want to consider IR illuminators at different locations. The distances are not that far..so good. 2 MP starlight cams are better at night. Look under posts by me (4431 vs 4233) for differences at night. Plus Nayr has some good pics.

Mckevin,

Welcome to the forum!

I have, somewhat randomly, assumed 90 degree field of view.
Using 90 degrees relates to the FOV of a camera with a 2.8mm lens. The wide angle lens is generally not recommended for outdoor cameras. Anybody further away than 10 to 12ft won't have much detail.

Visit Camera Calculator / Design Software
Enter you home address, google maps will bring up a view. Then you can place a virtual on you house. Pick a lens, the tool will give you the FOV. Then put an object at the place of interest (like a gate, or sidewalk), and see what PPF you'll get. A Pixel Per Foot will be calculated.

Or get a varifocal camera, which lets you adjust the FOV to meet your needs.

No cam #7 there, that was my best guess of the view from cam #4 beyond that corner. Still studying old posts and working things out. Sounds like I'm going to have to rethink my 90 degree FOV assumption.

I have 3.6 mm and can identify known people at 50-70 ft. Unknown people would be at < 50 ft. I would think about your individual circumstance..is there anything to steal at distances > 50 ft? If not you can tell whether it's a dog or person. As I told my wife...they can't break into to the house at 50 ft away, they have to come closer to get to a window..:)

Different people here have different circumstances..some in the city with a small yard where they can afford 3 expensive cameras to cover everything..some like me in the woods with a large yard and out-buildings where you might need a lot more cameras. Unlimited budget or retirees on a small budget..etc. Take your time..

Lol, definitely not unlimited budget. Nothing to steal >50 feet, but we have had some trouble with the neighbor kids throwing rocks and eggs at the camper. Would be handy to hand the police a video.

I would really like to see someone standing 50ft away from your 3.6mm camera ,and get a good face ID. Maybe 10 or 15ft not 50ft I never seen a camera do that. What camera do you have a dahua?

*cough*bullshit*cough*

ProTip: Dont use your dick as a reference to measure distances; its much smaller than you think it is..

Even a 4MP in the daytime @ 50ft has 35pixels per foot, you cannot identify known or even unknown persons..

This is a good read: https://www.axis.com/files/feature_articles/ar_perfect_pixel_count_55971_en_1402_lo.pdf

In short you need >80 horizontal pixels for a legal face ID (beyond a reasonable doubt), so for your claims you must be looking at giants with heads over 2ft tall with UHD cameras that wont do shit at night.

You know, get tired of your crude comments...just because you have great technical knowledge isn't a license to be arrogant.. Why not just say I disagree, that's incorrect, etc like everyone else does. I stated known persons such as my neighbors, friends wife etc.. I'll take the time to tape measure and show the pic. Yeah at night it's a lot worse

Here's the daytime pics.. white marker at 25 ft red at 50 ft. Pic 73806 is at 70ft. For anybody I know I could tell which person it is.. My reason for the advice was he initially stated he just wanted to tell what was out there..person or dog. If he wanted a legal face ID I wouldn't have said jack...

You proved my point nicely, thats a 17px by 18px face.. you cant recognize that, no way in hell.

Good thing I'm not here for your approval, so my attitude will remain unchanged and I will continue to call bullshit when I see it... dont like it? good, im not here to be your friend.. I'm here to debunk bad advice given by novices.

If your surveillance system cant get a reasonable ID; its pretty much useless for security.

I think the main difference is recognizing someone and identifying them. I could recognize my friends on a camera even if their face isn't visible. But if they should steal my stuff, it doesn't matter whether or not I recognize them, because they need to be identified.

nayr has a point. If you need a security system, it should meet the minimum requirements for a legal face ID. If you just want to make sure (for example) that your dog has not escaped from your garden, it doesn't really matter (until you capture someone who breaks into your house and you can't identify him on your camera).

And again..recognizing known people...see anywhere I said legal face ID? What Soepkip said is what I meant..you can recognize a known person in general. And to break into a house...you can't do it from 50 ft away...think I mentioned that also. You can see the pics and read what I said. Call it bullshit, inexperience whatever...I'll call out your arrogance and crudeness when you address me like that... really don't care about being your friend or you liking me..that's all I'm going to say on this post..wasting my time.

You guys are killing me.

Started out thinking I was gonna pick up a packaged system at Sam's. Now I have 6 ipc-hdw5231r-z turrets ordered from Andy, an Optiplex 3040 in which I will put a 128Gb SSD for the OS and a 6Tb WD purple drive for data, POE switch...
Please tell me there is an end somewhere, lol.

Welcome down the rabbit hole, hey at least your video wont be that crap your local news shows.. We need your help ID these murder suspects from a few blurry pixels.
