Can I use H265 cameras with H265 nvr?

I have a dahua NVR-4816 POE and want to add/upgrade a few cameras. most Cameras today Have H265 but my NVR is H264. Guess I dont really understand where the compression takes place, in the camera or in the NVR.

Can I only use H264 cameras?
 
The camera compresses the video before sending it over the network. There's a setting in the camera's web UI to change the compression type. You can always set the camera to use h.264 if the NVR can't handle h.265.
